I have been doing some searching and see that Warn does not make hubs for this model. I also see that some of you guys have done manual hub conversions with Aisin hubs, even though they don't fit perfectly. I'm assuming that the dealer would know which ones to sell me. So, which Toyota trucks would make a good donor? I'm assuming any early Toy pickup with a solid axle? Thanks

30 spline, found on 85 and older trucks/4runners. I have a set laying around.

Thanks for the info and thanks for the offer, but too far.

Are you sure you can put manual hubs in a 96 LC unlock them and get the rig to move when you put it in gear?

You can if you lock the center diff, which most likely means installing the center diff lock switch.

Easiest hubs to get are off a early 80's mini-truck, however I'm 95% sure you could also get them off a FJ40 or FJ60, any solid-axle Toyota would work I'm pretty sure, and many times it's alot easier to find a junkyard with an FJ60 than a solid-axle mini IMO...

Good luck...

Warn hubs off a 40 have the internal clearance to accept the shim necessary to keep the birf tight against the spindle. The Aisins will work but don’t have enough room to maintain factory spec when running full time 4WD. This only applies to late model 80 with long axle stubs.

pardon the silly quesion, but in the rover world some people would use fab series locking hubs to rangies/discos and be able to run detroits or other non selectables on the road.

Is this a feasable/real world mod? I don't like selectables as that is just one more techy thing to break when you are 3 days out on a trip. I have never liked the wimpy little arb compressor, and my co2 is for tires and tools in that order.

If the 'techy' part of the Toyota electric locker quits in the boonies, you can always lock and unlock them the (really) old-fashioned way, by climbing underneath with a wrench.

if you want some manuel locking hubs, get a 60, :D

Thanks for all the info guys. I checked out the hubs on a '89 4Runner today, and if I counted correctly, it is 26 spline. The count on my LC axle is indeed 30 spline, like Bear80 said. So, it's gotta be a '79 to '85 solid axle pick-up, and FJ 40 or Fj60, right?

Winch,

Yes

1979 - FJ40
1980 - 1989 - FJ60/62
1979/85 - Mini-trucks

Have appropriate Aisin hubs........Birfields are 30 spline outers & 27 spline inner star / birf side of axle

yeah yeah yeah, well I couldn't find one for sale that I like with e lockers, and you can even operate the damn things on a cable. now either bugger off or answer the question.

I would have to say that Toyota factory electric lockers are a lot more reliable than a rangies/discos on any trip. :flipoff2:

I hope I answered your "silly quesion"

bite me. This isn't about a rover, it's about a fricking hub. I'll go back to the hardcore section now.

Befiore I do, remember it's about information sharing, not bashing.

You mean information sharing like my pointing out that your reason for not liking selectables may be mis-informed? And therefore your question may not be relevent?
And by not bashing, do you mean like your response to me?

To answer your question: if a Detroit or similar-type permanent locker were available for the front of the 80-series, I see no reason why one couldn't use manual dial hubs with them, if thats what they really wanted to do for some reason. In addition, an extra-cautious person would carefully shim the birfield-to-spindle distance to simulate the spacing that the original hub plate achieved.

By the way, I have a pair of 30-spline Warn locking hubs that LandCruiserPhil refers to, if anyone would like them I can send pics, and sell them for $80 for the pair.

I guess 20 years of wheeling experience on 3 continents driving everything from willy's to 10 tons, using eatons, auborns, quaiffes, detroits and arbs is mis-informed. BTW, other than the quarries of nw Indiana, where do you wheel?

I won't even go into road racing and road rallying.

Your arrogance and attitude is amazing. You shouldn't assume some one is mis-informed, or unexperienced by a post count.

Same could be said about you.
