Hello,
Any suggestions on where to have my 85 and later 60 steering box rebuilt? In the past I have used west texas 4 wheel and off road but they will only do 80 boxes now. Redhead say they'll do it but starting at 536.00, that's awful steep to me let alone shipping from PA to Idaho.

Yeah I thought that was high, I heard they did good work though.

There are many on this forum that have converted to 80 boxes onto 60 series. Better parts support. But those boxes are way up there now $$$ esp without a matching core. (assuming it has to be box for box same)?

I'm actually using a 60 box on a 40.

But a new 80 box is so frigging beautiful and new

Redhead Steering Gears did mine recently, it works great and no leaks. $500ish for the service.

Search for a used one on Car-part.com Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market - https://www.car-part.com/

My limited experience with 80 boxes is that they're capable of racking up more miles before developing leaks and needing resealing or rebuilding. Our 80 has ca. 340k miles on the box and it is leak free, we've installed a ca. 325k box in one of our 60s and it is leak free, I'm running an 80 box in my 60 that had >200k when I purchased it used and after several years of use it remains leak free.

I asked around on the same question....redhead and go with an 80 box, was the good advice I received. I think there is some difference in the year models of the boxes so might need to make sure you are good as to what works. Mine is an 86....

Pretty amazing looking and that it can still be bought new, but today's inflated prices are insane!

I thought it was a little crazy at first as well, but amayama is $1800 now and Impex-JP is $1116. This also comes with a 105 shaft and pitman arm, which requires reaming to 60 TRE tapered hole. A used box plus rebuild is the cheapest route, but if you plan to upgrade the sector shaft during the rebuild then a new box makes a lot more sense.

I haven’t ordered from Impex-JP but have read about a good experience in the 80 section.

@gt7058a thanks for the info! Definitely a much better deal! I've ordered from MEGAZIP and it went very well, from the UAE Warehouse it looks less than a week to get here! I was shocked. So I'm planning on the 80 front axle conversion so the TRE shouldn't need to get reamed correct?(All 80 series steering arms....)

Yes, no reaming needed if going on an 80 TRE.

@gt7058a Does this new gear box come with the correct pitman arm like you mentioned above? Just trying to confirm. Thanks!

Mine did not. I found the packing slip and I ordered the pitman arm separately.

Let me check to confirm. Confirmed it was separate and updated my comment above and pm’d @4runner2FJ60
