So, instead of going to the June 2 UC meeting I am going to spend Sat to Mon in Asheville with my wife for my anniversary. I'm trying to plan what to do starting with where to stay. I was looking for B&Bs but there are so many to choose from...anyone ever stayed at the Crown Plaza Resort? Anyone have any ideas on places to stay and things to do besides the Biltmore House?

David Davis (Turkeypen) is your man for all things Asheville. He lives near there and works in town and is the ultimate tour guide.

My 2 cents...

I always stay at the Renaissance when I go. It is nice because you can park the car and essentially walk to where you want, when you want in town while you're there. Nice rooms and good service too:

If you want to spend a little more, be more isolated and be away from the hustle and bustle of town (doesn't really exist in Asheville but you get my point), the Grove Park Inn is awesome. Great golf course, spa and dining while experiencing pure relaxation.

Asheville has great live music and food. For music the Orange Peel is always a good bet. The weekend you are going will be active since it is the Asheville Music Jamboree at Deerfields Ampitheatre. Check out local talent the Avett Brothers on Saturday. They are great!

Have fun and enjoy!!!

Hey, now here's something I know about . . .

Forget the "Crowne Plaza Resort." Its just a Holiday Inn on steroids. As far as B&Bs, there are a bunch of good ones: "Cedar Crest Inn" (828-252-1389, my favorite); the Wright Inn and carriage House (828-251-0789), which is very nice; Inn on Montford, (828-254-9569). Now, if money is no object . . . . The Grove Park Inn (828-252-2711)

As far as Stuff to Do . . . . Mountain Bikiing at Bent Creek . . . . Hiking at Mt. Pisgah . . . . Historic Stuff, Trolley Tour of Asheville, Visit the Thomas Wolfe House . . . . Whitewater Rafting, NOC at Hot Springs . . . Music, just pick up a copy of the Mountain Xpress . . . Shindig on the Green Saturday Night in Downtown Asheville . . . Tourist (Single A ) Baseball, but nice because it can drop into the 50's at game time . . . Folk Art Center on the Parkway. . . Mt. Mitchell State Park (highest point in Eastern US).

Oh, and don't forget, the Biltmore Estate has the Land Rover Experience .

The list is endless! What are you guys interested in doing? Let me know, I will narrow it down some for you.

Music sounds good. We have a minor league baseball team in G'ville and hiking around here. Hmmm....Grove Park is nice but @ $500+ a night is a little steep! One thing I hate about picking a B&B that I have never seen in person is that pics online can be so decieving. I've booked reservations at several B&Bs only to be let down when I arrive so I appreciate the recommendations. I'll probably have to end up running this by my wife to get her 'approval.'

ive stayed at a few of the b&b's up there. the montford area is nice cause its closer to downtown where the action is. I really liked the last one i stayed at, THe Inn at Wintersun, out in Fairview only 10 minutes from downtown. The hostesses name was Hope and was extremely nice, full breakfast at 9, plenty to pick from if you sleep in, stocked fridge w/ snacks and beverages, free wine after 5pm, only 4rooms upstairs and a super nice suite downstairs ( if you try messin w/ the lock'd up thermostat and happen to break it, they will upgrade you to the honeymoon suite; dont ask how i know) the suite has a 500 gallon springwater jacuzzi in an amazing room. I think im gonna try and make the page mcconnel solo show up at the orange peel the following weekend. Lots of music choices in a'ville. a google search for asheville b&b's and asheville entertainment will turn up volumes of results. the NC arboretum off 191 is great if your a plant dork, and the entrance to pisgah at 280 (airport rd) and 276 offers a lot to do-- looking glass, john rock hikes, looking glass falls on the side of the road, and several others. its easy just to spend a leasurly weekend in town wandering the streets and shops and tryin all teh independant resteraunts. best of luck !

the inn at wintersun was 145 a night. and the clarion/sleep in was 89 off season and 119 during the prime. well worth the difference in price

I've only stayed at two places. Grove Park Inn. I could spend a whole day just in the spa area. I know that sounds girly but nothing beats this well almost nothing (I'll get to that in a second) This is the outdoor hot tub.

I spent most of my day in the outdoor hottub the size of a pool. Overlooking Asheville with a drink in hand and two big ass fireplaces on both sides. But there are a lot of stuff to do just in the spa, steamroom, mineral pool, hottubs all over the place, One thing I really like was one hottub that had a cool down pool built right in.

Mineral pool. You can float in the sitting position in this pool.

The Inn on Biltmore is a really cool place. Nice. But it's worth it just to be able to have the entire estate to yourself when the gates close. I got to walk around drinking beer and hang any place outside the house as long as we wanted.

All of the above cost money though. But as you can see the memories last a life time. Biltmore has a special for Sat night for 249.

Grove park in is about the same. 250 a night. Spa is 65 a day pp. One day is all you need.

Montreat is also a really cool place to go check out and walk around. You could check for a small cottage there.

Can't go wrong with Biltmore The wine tour/tasting is worth every cent, and I dont even like wine. The rooftop tour of the house was pretty cool too.

An ex girlfriend and I went over to Ash for a day last year and we just enjoyed hanging dwntwn and that pub with the Green Man brew. We were staying over in Cashiers so didn't have time for much else, but I'm stoked to go bck some day, especially for the wine tour. Have fun.

OK, thanks for the suggestions but we are now staying near Dahlonega. I found a new cabin w/ an awesome view for $100/night...can't beat that...and the wife is happy so that helps my cruiser habit.

Cannot beat that, You can say that again.

I always liked the highlands. That B&B right in the town that was recently redone looks like a good spot to re-introduce yoruself to your wife.
