I would like to replace a 3 hp three phase motor with a single phase 230V 3 hp motor. The application is an air compressor. I need some pointers on where to buy a motor. Does anyone have any experience with Harbor Freight, Northern Hydraulic, or any other mail-order house or national chain?

Do you have a Farm and Fleet near you? If so you may want to check out the motors there. Also if you may want to look for a good used Baldor on Ebay or some place for a reasonable price. Also check your yellow pages for motor repair and see if they have any used motors at a reasonable price. Finally dont forget to check the RPM's.

Grainger's. Also, check local yellow pages, there's a few places here in Phoenix that sell good motors (not Harbor Freight, I guarantee that) and I'm sure you can find something close to you.

If you live anywhere near a bigger city you should have access to a power transmissin company that should have what you need. As was also said, check with a motor repair place. In addition to Grainger I would check with McMaster-Carr and MSC as sometimes Grainger doesn't like to sell to private individuals. You will need to know the frame size and RPMs of your current motor also.

You don't need an account to buy at Grainger, just cash,c.card, d.card and the name of a business that does have an acct. If your employer has one pay cash and they will not see an invoice...that being said......

Make sure you get a good motor as stated above. If you need some help pm all the specs off of the plate on the motor you have! I am guessing around $200.

I bought a Baldor compressor motor from an ebay store called WECO-GROUP. Free shipping and cheaper than Grainger.

Thank you for the advice--this should get me started in the right direction.

I'm looking forward to having a quality air compressor in the shop.
