I have removed many a shifters from 3 and 4 speeds with two screwdrivers no problem, not gonna happen with this stiff-ass spring in my 79'. Does toyota sell the tool?

I used a pair of channel locks that have a rubber coating on the handles. The rubber gripped nicely when I pushed down and turned it. Are you sure you're turning it the right direction?

I did this and it always worked:

I used needle nosed vise grips. Press down and clamp lightly. Then turned ring by hand. Might need to spray something to loosen the old grease. Jeff

With all the half-donkey, creative things I do on my FJ40, sometimes it’s nice to have the right tool for the job. And I think this same tool works across the board on a lot of different Cruisers. I bought mine from Toyota; SOR has it too (but it cost more there I think). Took the Toyota parts people a few weeks to get it – kind of a special order. I’ve read here (Mud) that you turn cc to remove, but my FSM shows a short, clockwise turn to remove and mine just came right off. The other remover on the box is for my old 80 pickup.

Two big screw drivers one in each hand one on a angle forward away from you one on a angle towards you push down and twist. Works everytime I have done it.
