Hey guys,
I am looking for some info on the D-4D diesel engines being used in European Rav4's. I am building up a Jeep Mighty Mite and would like to replace the current driveline with something unique and reliable. Does anyone know if these motors have been out long enough to possibly find one in a junk yard? I am sure they cost an arm and a leg new so I am hoping someone has an idea of how to get a used one. Thanks,

They've only been out a year or so!! I doubt you'll find one in the wreckers yet and if you do it won't be cheap. They are in Central American HiLux and HiAce vans too.

Some of this is just a name change. The 3.0 D4D engine is the same as the 1KZ. Good little engine. If you can get one from a 90 series Japanese truck it will come with a built in intercooler, zoom zoom....

d4d has been out for a few years. Saw them in Iceland about Christmas 2003. They were indeed on Prado style cruisers. 120's

You would need quite a bit of wiring to use one of these engines. Best luck is getting a donar from the junk yard.

If you are looking for 4D4 half cuts to use wiring and computer I can get them. They are not cheap but I have seen them in wrecked prados (yes newer ones).

I have been tempted to get one myself and put the 4D4 in an FJ :D

very interesting seen that the 2KD-FTV have less power than 1KD-TE .. but anycase if you thought it would cost an arm and 2 legs in my case plus 1 eye and for sure a lung .. :D

1KD-TE = unheard of.
1KZ-TE = 3 litre IDI
1KD-FTV = 3 litre DI
2KD-FTV = 2.5 litre DI

sound interesting but weird. Are you sure of the name code of the engine ? I can't see it on toyota.com.pa

You are right .. in the toyota web page only appears the

Toyota 3.0 D4-D (1KD-FTV)

So let me veirfy it in fellow Hi Lux ( I thought he bought it last year ) and post here ..

A kind of oddball question, but could you mate a 1KD-FTV or a typical D-4D to an H55 tranny or are there new trannies made to mate with the much newer engines? More importantly, could you drop one into an FJ40 (mostly leaning against the computer, and mad wiring)?

No, the 1KZ and D4D are not the same. They are related but have different heads, valves, pistons and injection systems.
I know a guy who traded his 120 series 1KZ powered prado for the same shape D4D powered prade (1KD). The D4D is using about 20% less fuel.

The rav4 uses a diesel around 2 litres, they've been available in the UK for quite some time.

The 2KD engine (2.5L) seems to have disappeared in NZ. Maybe they weren't selling enough but all the 2wd hiluxs now use the 3.0 1KD. The 2KD had a wastegated turbo.

D4D's have variable vane turbo as well IIRC

Most do, but not all.
I could be wrong, I did say "IIRC" but I would like to know for sure

"First released in August 2004, the 2KD-FTV is the 2nd generation of the KD engine with a smaller 2.5 L (2494 cc) straight-4 common rail variable nozzle turbo coupled with a 32-bit ECU and Multi Pilot Injection System, diesel engine. The displacement of this engine is based on the 2 L engine. Bore remains the same 92 mm but stroke is increased to 93.8 mm."
I thought the "V" suffix was for variable?
Perhaps they make 2 variants of this engine, lower spec and higher spec with different turbos?

I think we also need to remember that toyota sells different spec engines to different markets worldwide. I'd expect the 2KD-FTV to be sold with a VV turbo.
Unfortunately the spec sheets for the 2.5D hiace and hilux's sold in NZ with wastegated are no longer available so I can't see what code they gave those engines.

I am reaching out to some of our Australian/NZ/Thailand sympathizers out there. I live in Canada where we do get more diesel options than in the US but still not near enough. I am looking for a front clip of a Prado 120 with a 1kd-ftv motor in it. Or something similar with a the same motor in it and 4wd. So not a Hiace or anything like that. I am requested a few quotes from some online Wreckers in Oz but I haven't had much luck yet. Is there a good source for this that I have missed? Thanks for any help or direction in advance.

To get a front cut of such a vehicle would require a rear end collision that wrote off the whole thing. Given the price they go for as complete vehicles it'd have to be virtually squashed before they'd give up repairing it and sell it for parts.

NZ and I think AUS too only got the D4D prado in 2006. They're still very new. Thailand will be your best bet, I was there in March and saw hilux's dating back to around 2000 with the D4D motors. I don't recall seeing any prados though.
