*light tech* :D

I am going to unbadge the 80 shortly . Today I plan to remove the centre grill and rattlecan it black, including the gold emblem. Next will come the rear emblems.

I cannot recall which rear emblems had studs that went into holes in the body ?? I would like to know ahead of time so I can plan what I will cover the hole with. One idea I think I like, if indeed a hole is centred with the truck is to get one of those TEQ pig emblems listed in the vendors section.

The early production vehicles, to January 1993, do not have any emblem holes in the upper gate. After January 1993 the "sombrero" emblem has two locating holes in the gate. The lower gate in all cases has no locating holes present.

On my '96 it matched what Dan is saying. Only holes (2) in the back gates were for the toyota T symbol. The 4WD symbol was just held on with an adhesive backing.

I thought about placing the pig there too. For several reasons, I placed it elsewhere...

One of the primary reasons was that I understand there to be 2 holes -- I don't think the piggie emblem is large enough to cover both holes. :frown:

2 smallish holes on the 97, about 1/8" or so in diam, not located symmetrically on the gate, kinda offset IIRC

Yep, one on the inner circle, one on the outer. I just put a couple dots of masking tape over the holes on mine for the days I had it off. Be careful, there's little rubber plugs in the holes that can fall into the tail gate really easily.

did you use tape or cement to put the emblem back on?

I replaced the large "TOYOTA LANDCRUISER" emblem on the back, as it was cracked when I bought it. It was attached with adhesive...no holes. I used dental floss and a hair dryer to remove it, then used 3M adhesive remover and a lot of elbow grease to remove the adhesive residue.

I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive to reattach mine. I had the stuff kicking around from an old project.

If you planning to remove the emblem then how do you cover/fill up the 2 holes?

How about small round pcs of the right tape over the holes , and a stenciled-Line-x'd design centered with the tailgate/truck ?

Maybe just a stenciled Toyota logo , or whatever you feel is appropriate.

I pulled of the centre grill yesterday, and taping it off, painted the black portions + the gold symbol a very, very flat black. I laughed .. my work partner knew I had started the process in the parking lot, and I heard her say an hr later as she walked towards my 80, .. "So .. when are you going to replace the grill ?"

:D Yeah .. it's so black-flatish, it's like a black hole. I have a mind to pull it again, and Line-x it ! The continue to the back with my heatgun, floss, and goo-gone and line-x instead of the centre emblem as well .

If I do that I'll probably pull those black, plastic inserts in the front bumper as well, and x then so I get a uniform finish to all the 'blackened' areas.

...line-x, line-x, line-x...
Ty - you need to get off the line-x kick...I admit, it's fairly cool, but it's not for EVERYTHING

I'm on commision ... :flipoff2:

The super flat black may have been a mistake . It looks great in the right light, but otherwise it stands out like a sore thumb. Almost too black , if you know what I mean. Plus with it swallowing up the logo in the centre, it all looks like a dark void.

Hmmm .. going to have to chance this on my days off . Plus my partner has threatened that she'll sneak over at nite and paint it fushia if I don't fix it !!

Covering the entire rig is one thing -- that's been done before and usually turns out nice. Ty's talking about a little line-x here...a little line-x there...

One thing I noticed about my bedliner'd portion of the rig is that it does a good job of blending into the background at night. If not for the upper half being OEM white, I'd have a hard time finding the rig w/o a flashlight.

Cover the entire rig in black bedliner and I'll bet you have people walking into it on dark nights :D
