Scanguage is worth the investment. I’ve had mine for almost 5 years now and have used it countless times for many things.

You can also use the scanguage to adjust for tire size and get accurate speed displayed on the scan gauge.

Mine lives on top of my steering column and always displays trans temp, voltage, water temp, and speed.
 
I need to use 4Lo a lot offroading to keep trans temperatures (Scanguage) down. Until recently have run 295 tires with stock 4:30 and rig is heavy. Two large flood lights in front of radiator may contribute. Most of my offroading has a lot of elevation change, Moab, San Juan Mountains, Death Valley, etc. This might change now as have 4:88s and lo range crawler gears in t-case.
So 4Lo usage depends on your rig build and where you wheel.
4wd trails can have much steeper descents than paved roads, 4Lo can save your brakes on those.
 
I *used* to use low range when the engine was strugglinh with the loading. Then I got an auto trans vehicle with scan guage and was ohrrified at how hot the trans gets and how fast when it doesn't seem like much load. So low range on moderate hills, and any slow going in sand (less than 25 mph).


I have scan guage set up to read trans temp, coolant temp, MPG and engine load......The poor gas mileage can be maximized watching the read out and selecting cruise control and o/d as necessary

Overheating?

Not while I'm idling in my driveway :). Seriously, just set it up... gotta find me a hill to conquer.
