i have a 66 that I’m putting back together, and I’m trying to go back to original...it was pretty stock when I got it. Anyway, it had an after market radio mounted above the windshield when I got it and of course an antenna. The antenna was mounted on the passenger side, in front of the door . So here is my question. Would a 1966 40 even have a radio, and if so where was it mounted? Thanks for any insight!

In the US at least it was 9/72 (73 model) a AM radio was a option. Those without the optional radio had a plastic blank in the space in the bottom of the dash above the heater. Heaters were standard by this time in the US.

I have pulled factory radios out of 40s back to 1968. A couple were attached sideways to the A pillar on the driver’s side. And a couple were attached under The steering column.

Both situations were physically very unsatisfactory. But they were definitely factory radios with factory brackets.

Interesting. Ya, both the location u mentioned would be a pita. So I think I will not put the antenna back, and fill the hole.

In some of my catalogs back to the mid sixties I seen pricing for a dealer installed Fujitsu Ten radio. But have never seen one shown on parts listing prior to the 73 model.

Being as the installs were driver’s side, the antenna was too. And they were two holers. I have sold most of them off but may have one or two left. They have a trail utility rating of zero: I’ve taken off ten times the number of busted ones over the decades.

There is an excellent write up in the FAQ section on the history of the FJ40 radios.

My Oct of 71 FJ40, titled as a 72, had the AM radio mounted under the steering column with the speaker in a metal box mounted on the pass side floor. I believe the antena was on the drives side. The radio location sucked. The 40 was a 3 speed with a floor shifter.
