I have a 64 FJ40. I got new wheel cylinders to install. The manual shows only the driver side layout. The passenger side is opposite to the manual. Question? how does one know which cylinder to put up and which one down. Does it matter. Is it different for front versus rear? Is there a trailing shoe. Hard to find the correct diagram showing up and down, right and left and front and back?

I don't know about your 64 but on my 72 the fronts are single acting, the rears double acting, they are not the same bore size. Up/down affects which way the adjuster acts to tighten the brake shoes - they will work in the wrong place but the adjustment will be backwards. I think the right side is the mirror of the left. There is a nice sketch here somewhere for the lay out, plus you can look at the online catalogs pic's.

SOR.com has a good picture of orientation
