I ordered a set of 15 x10 rockcrawlers with 3.5 backspacing. 6 on 5.5. The guy from 4 wheel parts called and said that I need a back space of 2.5. Shouldn't the backspace be 3.5 no matter the wheel width? I need a reply here. I am running 33 x 12.50s currently and plan to go bigger

stock Cruiser backspacing is 3.5". There ARE rims that have occasionally required more, depending on the design of the center, however 3.5" is the recognized correct number, and a normal set of black steelies shouldn't be a problem.
Course, there again, the BS on my new Allieds is 2"...the added width is great!!

I think that you will be fine with 2.5" backspacing on 15x10 rims. I have 15x8 wheels with 3.5" backspacing and it's really tight to my tie rod end. I run 33x12.50 tires on mine. If I ran a 15x10 wheel with 3.5 bs then I would definately rub my TR. It would put 1" more of the wheel on the inside of the mounting surface and 1" toward the outside compared to the 15x8.

3.5" backspacing on a 6" rim is identical to 3.5" backspacing on a 8", 10", 12", 14" etc rim.....the measuring point is the same. A 10" rim is ONLY wider on the outside edge by 2" given the same backspacing.
Backspacing is not a measurement of where the center is located relative to the center of the rim, but rather relative to the inner mounting surface of the tire.
3.5" is the recommended minimum backspacing, regardless of rin width. 2.5" will work fine, but your track width will be 2" wider total.
OFFSET is a different term entirely, and in that sense Design is right...

Sorry about that...I put a set of 15*10s on my 55 (same axles as your 40) about a year ago. with 3.5" back spacing they will set close to your tie rods but I found the reason I needed to run the 1/4" spacer was to clear the brake caliper. the factory toy rims have a domed rim web and most after market rims are relitively flat.
