Hi all

My Name is Subeer and I reside in Qatar (middle east). I have been reading all the forum posts on the 200 and am looking forward to getting one for myself. We shall be taking it offroad once in a while for the few months that its cool(er) here (Oct-Mar).

I cant understand the engine differences on the 200. Pls. give your inputs

We have the GX which is the 4.0l and the GXR that is the 4.7l, both have rear diff locks. Here are my thoughts

GX 2010-2011 is 4.0l engine that gives 240hp and 376nm torque, weight is 2415 kgs / 5400lbs
GX 2012-2013 is 4.0l engine that gives 271hp and 385nm torque, weight is same
Pro: I can take out the entertainment system and put my own with add-ons I like
Cons: Dont know if a few less HPs will harm. Can the unichip cover this difference?

GXR 2010-2011 is 4.7l engine that gives 271hp and 410nm torque
GXR 2012-2013 is 4.6l engine that gives 304hp and 439nm torque (vs GX2011, this is 64hp more with a smaller engine than GXR 2011)

Pro: There is the HP and few interneral goodies like navigation that can be taken care of otherwise
Cons: Dont like the new fog lights (who puts a round peg in a square hole with the running lights are not round), higher price for sure

P.S. GXR 2007 was 4.5 V8, gave 212hp and 372nm torque with a weight of 2364kgs / 5200lbs, so isnt the GX still going to perform better than the 100 series?

I can't be too much help. We only get a 5.7 Petrol engine in the US. I do wish we got some other options though. I would love a twin turbo diesel.

SUBU - from one GCC to another GCC - I would recommend getting a GX/GXR with the V8. The price is a little bit more but you can get a deleted spec from the dealer and put your own cosmetic options. (seat covers/Taiwan-Chinese GPS,SIAM 900 tires)

The resale of a V8 is alot better then that of the V6.

I know the desert you have in Qatar is a little more compacted then that of our UAE western zone but I just spent a week in the desert with a bunch of V6's and they just didnt have the power on the large dunes. Our 4.7 had to pull them out. Same with the support Prados that were out there with the 4.0 V6's

If your looking for a straight up desert/offroad/duning monseter look at the G9 spec 4.6p with manual transmission. has all the fancy stuff taken out so its light weight and is alot cheaper. (but only has front a/c)

Also be careful - alot of the V6 models do not come with the AUX tank - even though you only pay $0.90 a gallon the V6 can burn though fuel when your running high RPM's in the desert.

Thank you Ken.

Now that the 2012-13 LC v6 4.0L has as much HP as 2010-11 LC v8 4.7L, do you think the engine type and torque makes a difference in performance, or is the difference felt at top end of the RPMs?

A colleague who spends a lot of time in the dunes and the beach with his stripped down LC-G feels that HPs only make a difference for on road acceleration and on the dunes its the driver. What do you say?

With DUNE driving its 75% the driver 25% the car.

When I first started going out to the UAE western zone (the big rolling dunes near saudi boarder), there were a couple local guys in a older 08-10 V6 that were walking all over me in my VXR V8. (and there is no way to compare the 200 vs the local 70 series the farmers use)

The increased HP you dont really get to use when duning as you are normally in 1-2 gear. The trick is know when to accelerate when your coming down the dune to help you get back up the next one. Also important to crest the next dune so you dont go flying over the other end to your death.

Engines are the one thing I always tell people to go big from the start, leather seats you can add anytime, same goes for NAV and the fancy bumpers. But you cant just pop into an accessory shop and ask to convert a V6 to V8.

To put both comments in context.

When I first started driving in the desert I thought I was unstoppable with the V8. But I found out even though I had the bigger engine the locals in the V6 70 series and V6 200 series were better drivers (that I could admit) on the dunes.

However on this last trip there were a number of dunes and i was driving with people on my same skill level and their V6's were unable to go straight up. Where the V8 did not have the issue getting over.

Dune driving is serious, probably the most dangerous terrain imho. We have deep mountainous dunes. Pee in my pants every time I have to descend a big one.

Yeah those dunes arent what Im talking about. Im talking sizes that you have to drive straight down for like 20 and up to 50 seconds. No turning, no hesitating, you miscalculate and you flip. Ive NOT done this is my land cruiser.

look at the G9 spec 4.6p with manual transmission.

Do you mean 4.5 TD or is there an actual 4.6 petrol with a manual transmission? if there is i'm heading down to RAK asap BTW sent you an email a few days ago about similar topic ;)

Actaully I have to double check. I know the GL only gomes in 4.0 petrol and 4.5 diesel but the G9 I use to do alot of them in 4.7/4.5 I am 99.9% sure i have done a new G9 with the 4.6 a few months back. The G9/GL still come in the dark grey int.

I'll double check my emails when I get to the office today. I must have over looked it (when i got back from UAE summer trials I had almost 600 emails in my inbox)

1- You have seen 4.7 2UZ-FE 200 series Cruisers with a manual transmission?

2 - If you indeed have seen a 1UR-FE 4.6 V8 Cruiser with a manual transmission, did it come with a 5 speed or a 6 speed tranny? ( I know the auto is a 6 speed )

---

Please give me straight answers....pics would be nice, because as far as i'm aware the last time we had a v8 petrol manual on an LC was in the 100 series ( 4.7 )..

When you do factory orders like we do - you can get all kinds of different combo's but the lead times are a pain in the butt. Normally the TLC 200's I have I order though Oman (import for export) and many of them are configured more for work SUV then luxury.

I have two 2012 GXR V8's shipping out today - they are both 4.7petrol with 5 speed manual. I will have to go though my files to check about the 4.6 manual.

Great info xkennex , the safari LCs look very nice ;)
The manual in 4.7L must be new ?? Are they special order for your work?

Plenty of those and even bigger than what you posted. Google Rub Al Khali desert for more details. Will post pics later , but don't be scared .. It's easy, 4LO, 1 Gear, one hand on the wheel straight and the other sipping your warm coffee , no race, no brakes , and you will be just fine ;) . Come over we will give you a crash course !

 if at all possible, part #'s or even chassis #'s would be amazing
