I am attempting to curb a slow leak on my trans and I found this when while doing the back crawl and reconnaissance underneath my rig. The picture isn't that good, but there is a nice size dent right next to the hole. Also, there was a bolt missing above the dent, I replaced it for now. Questions - what is the tech name for this pan/panel? Does is hold fluid? nothing drained out when topping off my trans? what is the hole there for? and how should I fix this dent? rubber malet? I am afraid that the dent has caused the rear of the pan/panel to be bent off its mate so it is no longer flush. Big problem ? I don't seem to be losing sizable amounts of fluid. Thanks for any light shed/suggestions or words of wisdom.

That's the flywheel cover, protects the flywheel from mechanical damage from rocks etc. Doesn't hold fluid, unless your rear main is out, it'll run out the weep hole. If nothing's rubbing, no need to fix the dent I don't guess.

...or clutch inspection cover. A leaky oil pan gasket or rear main seal will drip oil out of there, with or without the plug. Take it off and look inside. 7 bolts.

thanks a lot guys! Glad the dent isn't a biggy. I'll take it off this Saturday and inspect.

I have a small rubber grommet type thing in that hole. Mine does drip/weep fluid from it.....so I guess that means my rear main seal is toast. Great......
Good info to know.
Is there a gasket to replace if you remove that cover?
Thanks

How much does it weep? Almost all 60's will have a weeping rear main by now...replacing it requires removing the tranny. If you need to do a clutch replacement, then doing the rear main makes sense. If the rear main only leaks a little, then might just be best to live with it.

No gasket to replace under that inspection cover.

It only drips a couple of small drips after every shutdown, 1-3 drips. It just makes everything around that cover so wet. I've tried wiping everything down and tightening the oil pan bolts, but that didn't seem to help. I am just monitoring it for now.

Actually there is a gasket that goes around the edge of the inspection cover. I believe it has been discontinued by Toyota, though CDan may know otherwise. In any case pieces of foam stripping, the kind used to line door frames, flat, about 3/4 inch wide, can be cut up and used to replace the old worn gasket. Available at Ace or Home Depot.

Again, it's not meant to hold fluid. No amount of tightening will keep it from leaking, because it's not watertight. It's actually designed to give you a heads up re the rear main. If you're leaking enough to cause concern, be aware that if the leakage rate increases, it'll soak your clutch, ruining it and ramping up your net cruiser cost!

Your leak is most likely the oil pan gasket, although rear main leaks are common, too.
