My neighbor is thinking about selling his 40. It’s a 1982 and hasn’t run in a long time. What do y’all think it’s worth? Was told the top end was done in 07

Not much with that description. I just saw a rig listed as runs - makes noise because it was run without oil. It does list some very nice stuff if its still there.

That’s pretty much all the description I got from him. He bought it in 07 for 17k from an auction. Has its fair share of rust and doesn’t run. Says battery, starter, plugs, and alternator need replaced but I don’t understand why the starter would go out from sitting like that. Mine sat for 10 years and were a year in and the starter is still good. Just worried it’s been beat on as it’s a trail rig

Well if wants the best price he needs to get a good evaluation. For example the starter doesn't work (because the engine is locked). Mine sat for 15 years. I had to clean the points to get it to fire. I did put it away with Marvel's in the jugs.

I saw this today and was very sad it was done to an 82 model year. The price would have to be ridiculously low for me to even go near that.Trail beater only imop.

walk from it. Study the market and make a decision about what you want to spend.

Study: noodle out 15 to 20 online deals. See in person 6 to 10 deals. And - use this forum.

To me - this rig will sell for less then 10k of its not drivable.

10 - to 15 k - you'll get rig that needs a lot of work.

if you want a FJ that doesnt need any work - your looking at 35k or more.

Boils down to how much sweat equity and $’s that you want to toss into it - and praying you don’t “oops”.

the more modifications done to the rig - the more challenges you will have later ( my opinion). ( for instance on that rig - the coils - if you want to change that later - what’s the cost to undo what has been done. )

It looks like it could be a blast. Your buddy needs to tear the bandage off and rip that headliner down. He needs to get it running and clean it up if he's going to sell it. It's a narrow market for that type of 40. I'm not a fan of coil springs either. It's built for a purpose. It could be very capable, but I think it probably needs more gearing and work.

I mean I’d be curious. For me the limiting factor is the suspension. Unfortunately, the proof is in the pudding, so if it doesn’t run you can’t tell how well that was done. Like I said I’d be curious…
