My Sister is in need of a vehicle....I found this through a friend, don't have all the specs on it. 219k, new paint in 96, spent 9k to have the 4wd system fixed(whatever that means) I have not talked directly to the guy so I don't know if it has lockers or not. But I do know that it's had an easy life on the pavement. So he's asking 5k for it. What do you think? Also I was told the oil pan gasket needed to be replaced(dealer quoted him 900$)

Looks like a great fine, I'd go for it. Run a history check and go with your gut, maybe get it afew bucks cheaper!!

:bounce:

 It's a 93, one owner, pavement pounder.....

just read the HG post, anyone think this may have been done yet. I could get it for 4500 I'm certain(friend of the family) I just don't know jack about 80s.

No lockers according to pics, looks like lexus rims on it...I would find out why? I second the vin check.

Sounds like a deal to me. Find out what he had done to the 4wd system and where he had it done and why the new paint. Other than that it looks good.

As far as the HG issue, the majority of folks have failures at relatively low miles 100-150k It seems that very few folks, including myself 170k have problems with the higher mileage trucks. It "may" be one of those things that if its going to fail it will do it then, and if it doesn't do it then, its probly not going to do it for a long time. This may be completely off, but it is the overall impression I get from the HG threads.
Good Luck,
Dan

I would be a little concerned about the fact that the truck was repainted when only 3 years old. The only reason that I can think of to repaint a 3 year old truck is that enough panels were damaged that it was cheaper/easier to paint the whole thing than to repaint individual panels. I'm not necessarily saying that the truck was wrecked... could have been hail... could have been some kids with a carton of eggs... but whatever the reason I would find out why.

Ok I just talked with the guy,

It was originally a two-tone paint which he didn't like, had it repainted silver along with the bumpers.

I tried to get him to explain what was done to the 4wd, I think that he got taken for a ride on it. He said that it was making a grinding noise in the front end(birf maybe??) so he took it to the dealer, according to him they replace the tcase and front and rear diffs?? he was saying that what caused it was a bad bushing??lol not too sure on that one. anyway for the last two years it hasn't seen too many miles.

I'd still plan for the cost of replacing the HG..It's foolish not to. Mine failed at 178k. I could have saved my self 3-4k...

looking at the front something doesn't look right... I have a feeling this thing was hit and that is why the repaint.... Take a real close look at the front frame and inside the engine compartment.... I am with some others here painting a 80 isn't cheep and there was a reason... I would look a little more... high mileage crusiers are great I have 2 but make sure you get a good one not one that has been thrashed.... there is a big difference...in what it will cost you to get it into a consistant reliable vehicle... When looking the biggest question I learned to ask was about the front axle/Birnfield service.. if the owner has had the vehicle any amount of time and had it serviced properly he/she will have had them done....

BTW lockers dont add anything to the price now but in a few years when these get to utility value it will just a thought....

Keep looking you will be supprized how many of these are out there...

Yeah, Bumper looks a bit off, but that is pretty common when the paint them. They just bolt the thing back on and don't worry about centering it. The hood lines are on, and the front markers are good. My 93 had a front end hit and you could tell by the markers. Thats a hard line to reproduce.

For a comparison I have seen a 93 with 130K miles go for $6,400.

Thats alot of miles. I bought my 62 with 185K but its my DD, not the wifes. (A little different in my opinion.)

You can do the oil pan gasket for alot less that $900. But if he has the records to back up everything I say why not. Just remember the HG might need redone and let her know what to do if it does happen.

I just bought a 93 four months ago, 215,00 on the dial. paid $4,500 w/ lockers and feel like I got a deal. Have had to do some work such as power stearing pump rebuild, replace tie rod ends, and crank shaft seal, but I think these things can be expected. I would be alittle concerned about the paint job and lexus rims, seems kinda fishy.

It appears 80 prices are ALL OVER the place....

In colorado they are higher than most places...you WON"T find a low mileage 80 series for less than 8-10K....thats a 93 and up...If you travel you can find better deals, or some area's appear to have better pricing.

A 96 or 97 w/lockers and around 100K will put you at 13K here in Colorado.

Southern California is the same way. 10k+ for low miles, and the word is out around here about lockers. I remember when I was looking for an 80, 99% of my conversations went something like this...

Me: Hi... calling about the landcruiser...

Them: No it does not have the round dial wsitch to the left of the steering wheel...

Me: Thanks.

The other 1%...

Me: Hi... calling about the landcruiser...

Them: Yes it has lockers... $17500 firm.

Me: Thanks.
