When I got my FJ40 two years ago, it had a Chevy 305, and a Chevy automatic transmission in it, since then I bought a FJ40 parts vechicle with a stock 4 speed transmission and transfer case, I have an adapter plate that I can use between the tranny and bellhousing, but what I need to know is what Chevy bellhousing will bolt up to a Chevy 305, like will a Chev 350 bolt up, or did they change the bolt pattern after a certain year so that everything after that won't work,or will any Chev V8 manual transmissission bellhousing bolt up tpo the 305, regardless of the year, or engine it came off of.

One of the beauties of the Chevy is the common bolt pattern. Most chevy engines have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. I6s & V8s, both smallblock and bigblock, and also some of the V6s. As for your 305 a small block of any displacement is the same. 283, 305, 327, 350, 383, 400, etc.

You need the bellhousing that the adapter calls out.

bit confused, you have two cruisers one is auto to lc case, the other is lc 4 speed and case, Which are you trying to put where?

If your gonna swap the auto for the manual I'd like a crack at buying the 350 from you for the right price.

I am glad to hear that the bolt patterns for Chevy engines and trannys are the same regardless of the year or if you have a 305 or 350. Once I get my FJ40 manual tranny in, I would sell the Chevy automatic cheap, the seals are leaking, but can be replaced.

bolt pattern did change when the 5.3/6.0 and other variations came out....but my old 78 block and my current 91 block were identical OTHER than the flywheel. (IIRC, that changed when the crank went from a early 1-piece main seal to the later 2 piece seal....)

where are you located? what do you think your gonna want for the tranny?

Or, more exactly, vice versa.. (older 2-piece to newer 1-piece) :D in... '86

cruiser nut, do you have a 4speed adapter plate or the three speed adapter plate?

I have only seen two of the 4 speed adapter plates, i have one of them, all others use the full bellhousing conversions. Might need to do some checking around but i believe you have to use a early cast bellhousing with the plate adapter? mine is.

th350s are cheap.

I'd be interested in the adapter th350 to cruiser case, if this item becomes available.

Thanks for the replies, I heard that they changed the flywheels, around 1985. I have a homemade adapter that you can use with a Chevy bell-housing, it will make it like an Advanced Adaptors bell-housing. I live in Eastern Canada...I would take $500 for the automatic tranny and transfercase..also the driveshafts...Cruiser Nut
