Troubleshooting my yellow box, the company is thinking that it may be a hall effect sensor vs an inductor type sensor

I'd put my money on the 80 using a Hall Effect sensor which would be a 3 wire connection to the sensor on the transmission.

Hall effect needs power (semiconductor device), inductive doesn't (basically a bunch of wire wrapped around a magnetic core).

Just an educated guess...

cheers,
george.

Thanks George. Looking it up in the EWD, the speed sensor does have a transistor circuit. No wonder it doesn't work.

I have contacted the manufacturer since their web site says all toyota 4WD's use the 2 wire to ask them what to do.

Concur

I replaced mine and it was a three wire. To test it, I had to put power on it while I used my thingamajiger to see if the whatyamacallit was putting out a doohickey.

No, an inductive sensor produces AC (wire & magnet) and can be quite high in voltage - up to 30+ volts.

The Hall sensor produces DC (nominal 0 to whatever +ve voltage it is design to - maybe 12V).

IF the speed converter input circuitry is designed to look for zero crossings (as many are) it will not detect the Hall sensor, but will detect the inductive sensor.

The devil is in the details...

cheers,
george.
