Hi there

Wondering what are fair market prices for 2002-2004 Tacoma V6 SR5 extended Cab and TRD.
Mileage around 120 k miles and considering clean Taco s with no frame rust.

Seeing a disparity of prices from 8 to 10 k.

Any input guys on pricing ?

V6 4wd extra cab TRD? I would probably be in that 8-10 range. I wouldn't pay that, but that is probably about right depending on mileage and condition. Those trucks and especI ally the 4 door 4wd trucks are extremely hot right now and the prices are representative. I was in the market for a 4dr tacoma but settled on a 3rd gen 4runner instead. I just couldn't justify paying nearly double for a 5 foot bed.

If you need the truck then you will likely have to pay for it, but if you don't need the open bed I would suggest you look into a 3rd gen 4runner. Prices are coming down and the drivetrains are pretty much identical in that year range.

Also, KBB is a great place to get a good starting reference point to work from based on mileage, options and features.

If your finding 4x4 extra cab v6's for that money, I consider you lucky. Ive been looking at them lately and for that spec in my area, your looking at nearly 14K!! 100-Series cruisers are going for less than Tacoma's in my area... its nuts.

Like @jynx did, I've started to look at third gen 4Runners. I found a pretty clean 2001 with a mild lift, bigger tires, and 110,000 miles for $6,900 on my local Craigslist. Downfall is that its only an SR5 w/ cloth interior.

Yep, Ive been looking for a clean Taco for almost a year and finally added a 03 TRD extended cab to my stable for 12K. It's a super clean truck with 118K on it but I was really lucky to find it. It was so recently traded in that I took it for a test drive right after it got detailed.

Found one with 250 K miles that can be closed at 10800 and one with 120 miles that can be closed at 12800.

Is 250 k miles high in these trucks ?

Im not the expert but I would think it would depend on maintenance. If it was me I would go with the 120K truck. There lots of life left in that engine if treated right.

What maintenance to expect at 254 k miles for a Tacoma 2001-2004 ?

Will the engine need full rebuild ?

I would think timing chain at a minimum would have been replaced at least twice in that engines life. Those are great engines but that is very high mileage for any engine.

I sold my 2001 5pd v6 ext cab Trd with 100k miles in 09 for 8500. I still miss that truck. I was casually looking for one again when I found my current 40. They are great trucks and I guess the word got out. I loved how powerful the engine felt in that small light truck. And impressing people with the rear locker and wheelbase always got me compliments on the trail. People would say wow great driving, It wasn't me it was the truck.

At 254 k miles are the 3.4 engine almost done ?

If they need servicing is it mainly chain ?

The 3.4 has a belt, not a chain. And I certainly hope that 254k is no where near the end for a 3.4. I did my belts, waterpump, seals, etc just a little over 204k, I am about to click over 223k and still running strong. I have put nearly 60k on mine since January of last year (2013). At that rate i will sail past 250k by this time next year and i plan to keep on chugging. As far as I can tell the 3.4 is like most all the other Toyota engines, if they are reasonably well maintained, then they should be good for many many miles.

As far as maintenance, to do the belt you pretty much have to strip the front of the motor, so it is well advised to just do the crank seal, cam seals, waterpump, thermostat, idlers, tensioner and pretty much anything else that is under the front cover. At that mileage I would probably look at the valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, etc. as well as checking on the radiator as they are prone to leakage, well on the 4runners anyway. You can look up pink milkshake and see what I mean on that one. Also the lower ball joints should be replaced and I would look over the steering rack and rod ends too.

Aside from that, basic fluid changes and you should be good.

I know it sounds like alot, and I would recommend OEM on most of those parts, but I am pretty sure my belt very well may have been the original and it didn't show any signs of wear at over 200k miles.
