What To Do With Your Tranny

Yes except your Prius is also just as long lasting and dependable, it’s shocking how reliable and yet how complex it is. Why can’t Europeans make a car last pass 90k with half the complexity is beyond me.

Reliable yes...rugged, NO! Bumpers loose, interior is crap, etc.

What ink pot said...

My 07 Camry Hybrid runs like a top and is tighter than a nun's crotch. It has 175k on it.

As to the original topic. I drained and filled the tranny on my 92 for the first time ever in 2015. I had my buddy do it. He owns an AAMCO franchise. He said it looked like brand new other than the fluid being dark. It had approx 230k on it at the time. Now I drain it once a year and refill. Same goes for my 93.

Aftermarket bumpers??? Give ARB a call. The 80’s interior isn’t all that if you ask me.

Regretting selling my 08 Prius at 170k, it still has the original 12v batter and rear brake pads. many many Prius out there at well over 300k.

Nah man...tiny little bump pops the plastic clips off the plastic bumpers. Have a Camry too...runs great, but both are the epitome of disposable IMO. Drive till they quit, throw in the gutter and go buy another. Not the case with the 80...rebuild and keep on truckin!

True, can’t rebuild the Prius, it will be a shocking experience, quite literally! :hillbilly:

My A343F s*** the bed with only 125k miles on the clock. No slipping in forward but reverse slipped under even minimal load or slope. I drained a gallon of ATF and the fluid was completely black. I ended up swapping in a A343F out of a similar mileage mall Cruiser that was wrecked and parted out. Plan is to swap a gallon on the regular now.

And just to clarify, the A440F is not a desirable transmission. I know it's not an 80 series transmission, but Mr. T nonetheless

People beat on them with turbos/superchargers and big diesel cummins power without much issue. I've been reallreally suprised I was expecting issues with mine on the 4bt that seams to eat turbo 400 and 700r4's. 250k on mine with 30k 4bt all original minus shift kit. I just started running 2nd gear lock up on my trans tune to see if I can squess a little more mpg out of it.

I have been running a 6bt up to my stock tranny and no problems

Personally I wouldn’t say the A440 is undesireable. I’ve had 3 in 80’s, all with over 250,000. One had just under 400,000 (it was my parents) and never had any work done to it.

The A440F was in the 60 and 80 series...

My 1992 with original A440F and over 305,000 miles disagrees with this.

Mine only has 251k on it but it also disagrees. As I noted above it had around 230k on it the first time I changed the ATF...

I think the lack of proper cooling for the 62 A440’s led to their, sometimes, less than stellar durability.

Sooo, when it does come time for a rebuild, which way to go? Toyota sells the A343 for right around $2k with exchange. That's pretty cheap as far as rebuilds go. I imagine that is a reman transmission but don't know for sure. Anyone know if that is the case and if they are as good of quality as the original A343? I am running boost on my engine so I really am considering doing a new trans as PM and adding the Transgo kit to it like my current transmission.

It is a reman but it's done by Toyota. The good thing is it comes with a new/remanned torque converter too. If I didn't find my low mileage transmission I would have gone that way. Pretty good deal really. I don't think you could find anyone to rebuild an A343 for less.

I checked with my buddy that owns an AAMCO Transmission. I have a spare 442 for my 93. Was going to have him replace all of the solenoids and such. Apparently they are the same solenoids as a GM tranny. It was going to cost me about $1000 for labor and everything since it was already out of the truck. Granted this is a buddy deal. I will probably end up doing it since mine has 348k on it...
