I gave it a Google search and didn't get much, did a bit o searching on the i8mud site and didn't get much either . Saw it in title and from what I can tell I dont see anything different . So why the difference in vin ? Its a triple locker for 4500. Mileage is a bit high at 278,000 .. and its def not a diesel . So why the letter difference?

Where are you seeing this?

Here's the vin JT3HJ85J1T0144410. Buddy ran a free car fax. Theft recovery in 16'. Funny what a car fax shows

Looks it was stolen 11/29, recovered 12/30. Man this is a toss up for a triple locked car with service records.

I believe the '5' will denote which market it was built for.
For an example, HDJ80 is an Aussie market turbo diesel 80 series, HDJ81 IS a Japan domestic market turbo diesel 80series.

This is a USA rig though . Originally sold in Georgia. What I can't wrap my head around lol. Here is the part of the car fax I'm not too pleased wirh

A friend had a vehicle stolen and recovered once. When they pay out they basically are buying the truck from you. Think of insurance that way. When it gets recovered it still belongs to you but you got paid for it. Now you can negotiate with the insurance but typically it goes to them and becomes a total loss since they paid out full price to the owner.

i ran the vin through tis and it came up as a salvage title View attachment 1755025

The sad this is....this was from a dealer . Not necessarily a deal breaker , but dealer was dishonest about the title , and you should have seen what he wanted . I won the truck on fleabay for a little above 4,000 , but resale is s*** if I ever decided to resale , at least in missouri .

For the first time in my life I'm tempted to tell dealer and ebay screw off, vehicle was listed as clean titled on their auto sales site .but then I get bad mark's on my ebay acct. Lamesville.

so did they not even mention that it was a salvage or did they just kinda blow it off and gloss over that fact. im assuming that it got the salvage title due to the theft so that's not really a big deal, its not like it was totaled in an accident and poorly repaired to be sold. any sort of vin check should have come up with a salvage title

They mentioned no theft nor salvage title . And they had it listed on their site for 11gs! The missing outdoor driverside door handle was a clue , that's when I ran the carfax . The hj85 vin tag kind of threw me for a loop originally , but I figured if i got in to it for less than 4500 with triple lockers , even with the mileage at 278,000 , I would be ok on resale down the road if I wanted to , but man I'm really stock between a rock and a hard place on what to do . He was honest that it was a down south truck lol.

it looks clean from the pics and being a southern truck it should be pretty free of rust. you could back out of the deal because it was not a correctly listed vehicle if your not comfortable with the purchase.

I just sent them an email. Basically told them that we can work out a cheaper deal possibly or I'm out because of the title situation . If I ran it for another 10 years that is one thing , but no matter how long I keep it , I will never get more than what I paid for it , so we will see. I just dont see a titled fjz80 climbing in value much anyway unless it was built well , but esp after it being salvage , I'd be hard pressed to get what I may end up paying for it .

clean title is always better than a salvage title for resale, but if someone is buying the truck to chop it up as a truggy then they wont really care, theres a buyer for every truck at a price.

There is no such thing as an “HJ85”

All American 80s had either the 3FE (91-92) or 1FZ-FE (93-97). No “H” motors were sold in the US.

The H in the VIN is just a letter. My 93 has a D.

If I was you I would take a deep breath. Stop thinking you got some super duper deal (you didn’t). Notify eBay that you are cancelling your offer to buy because the ad was misleading.

Do your research.

Vehicles are, generally, not “investments”. If you are counting on any vehicle to go up in value you are looking at it incorrectly. Sure, some go up in value.

If you are someone that thinks they are going to “flip” 80s then you will join the rest of them that have lost their azz because they don’t know what the **** they are buying.

$4k for a 3x locked truck without rust and that looks clean is a good deal. Asking them to go even lower is pretty unlikely in my book. It really comes down to, do you want an 80 to go out and have fun and enjoy owning or do you want to try and make money on an old used ‘90s SUV. If it’s the first you’ve got a good start. If it’s the latter you’re in the wrong place. Lol

Not a car flipper , I can promise you that . I worry about resale if and when . May keep it till it breaks in half, may keep it a year or two. And I dont believe it was a super deal either . Without knowledge of preventive maintenance it may be the turd of the century .

Looks like a good deal to me. It was stolen, so what? Could have been fraud and just sat at a buddies house for a month.

I can add that 49tire are Cruiser guy(s) and are active on this forum so there’s that.
