Is this thing really necessary? It seems to just hang there on the frame just behind the crossmember and has no real purpose. There isn't one on the other side!

I don't have a manual......................

It's a vibration dampener.

you have officially passed the test. You are now a true 100 series owner, enjoy.

Mine is sitting on my shelf in the garage.

It's a GPS tracking device installed by the US Government at the border to track your position at all times! Not needed. Take it off. Plus it adds weight which kills your mpg...:flipoff2:

A vibration dampener! Now isn't that special.................................On the shelf it goes.

Thanks...................I thought the cup holder was creative.

Here we go again.

A damper.

(Not a dampener. A dampener is something that dampens, or "makes more damp", e.g., moistens.)

:)

The forum admin should find a way to make an automatic "What is this part?" thread counter :)

Removing the "frame thingy" and driving hundreds of miles over corrugated dirt roads could lead to vibrations.

There are something like 7 sizes/weights to these and are individually tuned to each chassis. So, if you threw yours out and now regret it you can't just grab one from any other truck and bolt it on expecting to get the new car smell back.

At least these threads are all started by guys who have bothered to look underneath their truck. And these are not covered in the Owners melon ... manual.

Theoretically, the mass damper could help attenuate vibration.

In practice, I wonder how much effect it really has...

I've seen mass dampers in lots of other places, in Japanese marque vehicles. Evidently, they have a thing about mass dampers...not sure if the US automakers share their enthusiasm for these things. (Probably not, if it adds cost...)

Of course I do not have the technical answer, but I am guessing with reasonable correctness that Toyota does not spend money on research and manufacturing and labor on the assembly line to put this on the truck if its worthless.

Help me out fellow 100 owners, what reason or reasons would one have to remove it? IMHO - it stays

I had to remove mine to fit sliders.

I wonder if it could've been placed on the side of the frame rails rather than the bottom and provided the same effectiveness.

Fitting sliders probably changes the vibration pattern enough to make the damper useless, anyway.

dang i was under there tonite and didnt notice that strange lookin thing...must already be removed
