what size is the ring gear in the back of my friends 1985 toyota 4runner auto trans with the 4.33's ? just trying to find out if it is an 8" or a 7.5" so we can order a ausie locker it is a 27 spline pinion

so no one knows this one huh?

You have an 8" rearend. All toyota pickups and 4runners from 79-95 had 8" rearends. Gear ratios changed between engine and tranny. Most common was 4:11's, but autos had 4:33's (like yours). The V6 rearend is stronger than the 4 cyl. But I'm not sure why or how. Aussie lockers are awesome. I have one in the front of my 4runner and its much better than the lockright I have in the rear.
Also look into finding a 86-95 rear axle housing because its 3" wider and adds some width to the track, and keeps tires from rubbing the frame on full stuff. Sorry for the long post, just trying to be informative.
Good Luck,
Mike

yea we knew all of that stuff about the 85's bein shorter and we have a few donor housing, and shafts lying around for just that. It was just confusing that the aussie locker wasnt listing the 8" ring with a 27 spline pinion. thanks for the info frty.
