The fuel and fuel return lines snaped off of my tank when trying to remove them..

A) I can easly put 1inch copper tubes running off the tank to clamp the hoses back onto and be done with it.

B) should I order a new sending unit (I think thats what its called) but I think Im going to have a lot of trouble removing the old one. What to do what to do?

I would bite the bullet and get a new fuel tank. That one looks old and rusty anyway. No telling what its like inside.

I don't know if you are aware of it, but there was a fuel tank recall on FJ60s for the years 80-89. If your tank has not been updated by Toyota, any Toyota service dealer will replace the tank for free.

There was some recent discussion about this on the board:

I hope this is your problem, becasue it would be free and easy solution.

Call Toyota of America (not a dealership) and they will be able to find out whether or not your tank has been replaced via the VIN.

If it has already been replaced (most were prolly replaced in 1991 or so by the PO) then I would get a new tank. I don't know any other solutions besides cleaning it out. If it's rust, then you would have to continue to clean it.

Cool thanks for the info....I'll give them a buzz today. The tank is not really that rust. just that corner where the road salt got to it. But that would awesome if I could get a new tank.

thanks

Al,

I would replace the pick up for sure...I set of vice grips on those bolts and I bet they turn out no problem. I thought I had an extra one but couldn't find it. Interesting to find out what Toyota wants far one.

Lowtide,

Not going anywhere soon ???
How about trying a Snickers bar ???

Sorry, couldn't resist ...

Brad,

Your baitin' him. When he find out the cost we're all gonna get pics of his fabbed up gas tank. Maybe he could start building oversized tanks ? I'd buy one.

Cheers,
Cahil

P.S. Al, check you fuel interface panel, located passenger side rear quarter, inside next to the fuel tank main fill line. Where all the vent hoses go. There's an vertical interface panel for the vent lines mounted on the sheet metal body panel. That's probably shot too.

Call your local dealership, they should have access to the records.

A dremel will take care of getting that out too...

I have waited on that line for a half an hour before, have the dealership make the call for you, it's there job. I was told that only the tank comes with the recall, but the next tank I got the recall looked like they had replaced a lot of stuff I had already replaced before bringing it in, not sure about the though as I couldn't see it.
SOR.com has the fuel pickup used for I think $15, and it was in perfect shape. You'll need an impact screwdriver to get those screws out, they still might brake. If you can be 200% sure that ALL of the gas is out of the tank then you could use heat to help loosen the screws. No make that 300% sure. Or if you don't mind retaping all 5 holes you could use a hammer and chisel and just knock the heads off the screws.
Good luck.

I would discourage the use of heat for this application.

You need just a hammer and screwdriver this is how I do it 100% success and they are rusted up here in canada and I have done this on old cars. Is that hit the top of the screws a couple of times and the then place the screwdrive on top and hit the screwdriver to make sure that it seats in good and push down and turn to remove the screw and if it does not turn repeat all over it will come out .

Soak 'em in PB blaster.
