What kind of problems can THIS have caused?

So I'm replacing a bunch of parts on my 87 FJ60 and came to a point where I'm removing hose 17343 (it's one of the hoses that's part of the AIR injection system)and noticed all this rusty sediment inside the hose.

I removed the hose and poured out the "stuff". The pictures below show what was in there and whats still in the valve pictured where the bottom of the hose attaches to.

The rust seems to be part of the metal that these hoses attach to.

I can't imagine this helping my truck run good.

Any ideas what this stuff could have caused?

If that is in anyway connected to your coolant system then it could be like that in other places.

not coolant. air. part of the egr/emissions crap. check your other hoses, especially close to the air pump. mostly it will just block stuff, but you wouldn't want any of that in your air pump.
 
This is actually part of the Air Injection System...no coolant going through here at all.

It looks like the metal disintegrated and this stuff just was being "whoosed" around in the hose and between the two valves shown in the diagram in the attached thread link. Seems like it had no means of escaping.

Weird eh?

Yup. I suspect it's the result of your air pump or a vavle not working, thus allowing the accum. of the rust. Your AIR injection system has notworked for quite a while, one could assume. The EGR can do the same thing if it doesn't work or is disabled.

You are looking at corrosion due to the condensation inside the AIR system. The hose is the lowest point in the system and the condensation gathers there and dries right on top of the valve.

Clean it out and verify your AIR check valve is functioning. Should blow one way and block air flow 100% towards the hose.

There isn't a performance issue, the AIR system isn't a part of the combustion process, it's downstream of the engine.

You bet. The plugged hose could have blocked the important addition of supplemental air being pumped into the exhaust and possibly the catalytic converter (depending on configuration of the system)

The additional air is used to continue combustion of the exhaust gasses after they leave the engine. The AIR system really helps lower partially burnt fuel (CO) and unburnt fuel emissions (HC).

Why don't you post the results of the failed test?

Sorry to be exacting, but I prefer to see all the gases: HC, CO, CO2, NOx and O2 since they work in unison and offer a picture of the efficiency of both the motor and the emissions systems.

Any chance you would be willing to recreate the test results in full?

I see you have been working on this for a while. Let's get her fixed and move on!

I'll try and find the old measurement readouts today and post them. I'm going to take that valve apart and see what else is in there.:doh:
 
Hey Jose, That would keep you from passing smog! You most likeley need to rebuild your ABV and check to see if your pump is pumping air or just spinning. A fresh (new) cat will help a lot in passing smog as well I went through this last year with my '85 and it was 20+ year old smog stuff not working that kept me from passing.

Or you could try the spot near my house.... A bit pricey but well worth it... Its a test only spot and did my smog there about 10 month ago? Lets just say that I've needed a carb rebuild since I bought the truck..... TEE HEE...:D

Yeah, as soon as I'm done putting all this stuff back together, I'm going to take the ABV setup apart and check to see what's going on in there.

I'm almost done with this work. I finally got the intake/exhuast manifold on. It was a bear to remove and even more to put back. I finally figured out how to properly do it. Now next time, it won't be so difficult.

Now the fun starts with putting all the vacuum lines back where they are supposed to go.:meh:
