What kind of 4 speed tranny to use?

why are you changing

Why do you want to go to the 4 speed? prob with the 3 speed or just trying to upgrade?

if you dont like the three on the tree and vacuum 4wd you can go floor shift with the 3 speed and manual shift 4 wheel drive

The reason i am asking is if you are just looking to upgrade then maybe it might be an idea to wait till the engine or tranny goes and then swap in a 2F/4 speed

swapping in a 2f/4 speed is not without issues though there is still a list of things to sort out to make it work, but we are not talking major things ---fan, alt mounts, driveshafts, throtlle linkage etc
most of the solutions are to be found on the site as so many people have done it

I used the 4 speed xfer case but some will use the 3 speed by using the kit mentioned above

Hi All:

X2 what "freak" wrote!

What do you mean "AlexB" that the rig will only do 45-50mph? You should be able to 65! Yes, it will be very noisy - both the engine and the t-case gears.

Regards,

Alan

No. Both the 3 speed transmissions and 4 speed transmissions are 1:1 gear ratios in the top gear. If you can't get above 45 to 50, then you have something else going on.

Well thanks for all the different opinions and sugestions it looks like for me it would be better to stick with a 3 speed for now. I guess noise was the problem I didn't go faster then 50 since I only drove it once on a highway and the engine was really loud so I didn't wanna damage it so I didn't go faster thank you again

AlexB,
As have many others, I have 100,000's of miles on 3spd w/ 3spd xfer and you should be fine for up to 65mph if the motor is a runner. The 3spd won't break behind a 1F unless you put big tires (35+) on. Many of those miles on mine came behind a chevy which meant 70-75 ish on 31's and thats just getting scary. Plus they are cheap, cheap, cheap. And easy to swap out one handed:)

That being said, I now have the H41 in front of the tcase for a lower range because there are lots of rocks near me.

Believe it or not, you can get these trucks quiet. But it is a process.

Welcome. Welcome.

Well that's what I was looking at 35" tires I drove it on 32" and it was loud maybe bigger tires will make it go faster and a lil quieter I don't wanna go lower then 35" cuz I'm going SOA just finished the cut and turn in the front with 5* caster so 35" will be ideal I think? Lol and u say I can damage or brake a 3 speed with 1F running 35" tires?

Hello, I have a 1969 FJ55, 4 Speed + Reverse, Non USA, My transfer only Have H2, H4 an Neutral, is this a 3 Speed Transfer Case or L4 is broken?

I'm just saying that's getting into the territory where these little cases are getting stressed too much. It will come down to your clutch abilities. If you aren't locked up and can slip the clutch when the tires are bound great, you may never have problems.

If you plan on rock crawling you will find much happiness with a non-US 4 spd. or save your money for a 5 speed and get the best of both worlds.

HN1969FJ55,
All the xfer cases are 2 speed. They are denoted 3 spd or 4 spd tcases as they went behind 3 spd or 4 spd xmissions.

I believe originally you should have had the 3 spd case, up until 1972. Don't hold me to that number as I'm not as familiar with FJ55's.
