im getting another dog, and as much as i would LOVE a Siberian Husky, i have heard that they are not good dogs to allow off leash. which is something that i cant do especially with not having a complete fence in the back yard. what do you think?

Pitbull. Everyone tells me that keeping them on a leash only makes them angry. Letting them off the leash makes them happy and sociable. See this precious little fella? No leash makes for a happy boy. :)

i had a yellow lab/golden mix. he didn't have a leash from the age of 2 until we put him down (12)

any dog if you take the time to train it.

Huskys are terrible dogs off leash. Danes are not so good either. Very loyal dogs seem to do well. Labs, Goldens, Newfs. Pits and Rotts too, from what I hear.

Danes are "guardy" dogs. Their instinct is to inspect everything and everyone around you to make sure none of it is a threat... This is why they'll wander around so much if you let them. They were bred as estate protectors in latter years, thus the tendency to wander around inspecting everything to make sure it's in order.

that being said, almost any dog can be walked off leash if it's well trained. OUr Dane is trained so that when I say "Come on" she stays within 20 feet of me. "With me" means the same as "heel." Anytime the dog bolts after something I use the command "Emma, WAIT, EASY!" and she stops in her tracks.

You've owned a Dane, so you know how to give a command. :D A gentle correction with a Dane is considered yelling with any other breed. You have to make sure the dog knows who is dominant 24 hours a day.

But, regardless, it's all a matter of how much time (or money) you have to put into training.

There's no dog that is "naturally" good at being off leash.

My blue heeler is right under foot unless I am throwing a frisbee for her... and if she does stray, I just call her name and she comes right back. I can't speak for the breed as a whole, I can just tell you how mine is.

Any dog is a good off-leash dog... with a shocking collar. Excellent training device. My huskys stay as close to me as they can get now.

illegal... :/

completely not true. you can't have one in denver. Dounglas county is fine.

Are you parents ok with taking care of a dog for the forseeable future ~10 years?

Right training any dog will do but in a neighborhood such as yours I suggest you finish the fencing. Any dog is has the ability to run off when your not looking if a cat fox, rabbit, etc. runs by. Bulldog, basset hound might stay around better ;0)

Just go to your local animal shelter and rescue an old fella. No need to spend hundreds of dollars on a pure breed.

x2. Plus some obedience training. My heeler/lab mix-thingy is really good.

I'm with mancinator on this one. However, some need more training than others depending on the breed and individual personality.

Also, imnsho, not one should ever be out of your reach if you can't bring them back by voice, training aid etc.

Electronic collars (E-collars), or shock collars as they are often called, are excellent training devices that are more humane than chokers if used properly.

I have a dominant german shepherd and, when we are out, he is never without some type of training device on whether it be a prong collar attached to a lead or e-collar.

By the way, my brother had two pure bred Siberian Huskies and I used to bust a gut at watching him chase them both down the street when they got loose!! That is until he finally put up a six foot fence for them. They have awesome personalities but they love to run and they need to be worked!!:D

But all I got is this fat lab and he's a great dog too :D

Ummmm.... he's only fat because of what he is fed.....

I understand, I have two labs that are such great dogs I can't resist giving them a little "extra" food here and there.

Labs are some of the greatest dogs.

No such thing as a bad dog, just a bad owner! Socializing and training are the best things you can do for both you, and a dog. But you're a dog owner, so you don't need me telling you that... I have a little pitbull and is the greatest little dog, 40plus dogs at the doggy-daycare he's at weekdays and everyone there loves him, gets along great with everyone. He got his ass kicked by a yellow lab(the white bread of dogs) last week-terrible mutt, never socialized, possesive etc... goes to show you! Anyhow, good luck with it, and post some pics of your new family member.
Cheers!

So true....Ive bread and trained many hunting dogs and trained many foo foo dogs... My newest to train is a minuture Dobie..its about the size of a squirl, so her brain is about the size of a peanut. It took some time but she will follow any command that my hunting dogs do...ANY dog can be a good dog if trained properly..on or off leash... the lab in the picture is my#1 dog ever...the white one is mini american eskimo I was asked to train because she would not ride in a car...now we cant get her out of a car....
