What is a good "off leash" dog

I echo the statements that any breed can be trained to be a great dog. The thing is, labs just seem to come by it without much training. Hard to beat.

I'm with mancinator on this one. However, some need more training than others depending on the breed and individual personality.

Also, imnsho, not one should ever be out of your reach if you can't bring them back by voice, training aid etc.

Electronic collars (E-collars), or shock collars as they are often called, are excellent training devices that are more humane than chokers if used properly.

I have a dominant german shepherd and, when we are out, he is never without some type of training device on whether it be a prong collar attached to a lead or e-collar.

By the way, my brother had two pure bred Siberian Huskies and I used to bust a gut at watching him chase them both down the street when they got loose!! That is until he finally put up a six foot fence for them. They have awesome personalities but they love to run and they need to be worked!!:D

Dont take this the wrong way Gris, but if you have to use a device to train a dog, then your doing something wrong. There are dogs that have A.D.D type personality, it may take triple the hours to get them to look at you as "the lead pack dog" but any dog will listen and respect you if the proper steps are taken, wich can be many long and tedious hours of showing them that your boss, and at the same time, gaining your trust and respect....just my 2 cents

Blue Heelers are very loyal dogs..

But all I got is this fat lab and he's a great dog too :D

Awww, what a cute buddy!

I agree about Labs. My lab-mix is the smartest dog I've ever had- and he is very loyal and obedient. Not tons of training- but you can certainly trust him outside w/ no leash.

Ditto on that...worlds greatest dogs no doubt, I guess that is why I refinanced my house to keep mine alive at age 5...everyone calls me crazy, but I couldnt put a champion dog down at age 5, and I did what I had to do to keep him alive...4 doctors....3 states and more money than my cruiser is worth, hes still here at age 8(same dog in previous pic). He had to have a Leg and hip transplant....these are pics of him after surgery, not to mention he had to have a caretaker 24-7 for 6 months. Yep....I guess Im crazy..thats what I keep hearing

No worries, I didn't take your response wrong at all. I'm attempting to respond but my response is turning into a book and I'm half falling asleep!! :)

I sense a good discussion on dog training philosophies coming up so I will put my response on hold till the a.m. and finish it then. Or at least edit it down enough to make it readable!!

By the way, I know where you're coming from in doing all you can for your little furry family members. We lost one last year to cancer.

I usesd to be good looff leadsh....bue now I don'
t kkn ow.....fxxx

Blue Heeler or Lab or a X would be my choice but my Stafordshire bull terrier bitch is pretty good.

All dogs can be trained but it takes patience and a few years before they become really trustworthy.

Its all about having the right owner as much as the right dog;)

any dog if you take the time to train it.

Whether your dog obeys you off leash is not a reflection of the dog's breed in any way, shape, or form. This is entirely a "human" issue. Rephrase the question -- "What can I do as an owner to train a dog to be obedient off leash?"

It takes time, effort, and consistency. You will get out of it exactly what you put into it.

Ya Think??:D

He actually went from 105 to 90 in the past year when we switched to some sort of lean dog food.

this just strikes me as disturbing. you have millions in 3rd world countries starving, and we're feeding our dogs diet dog food due to them overeating???
