We're awful lucky to have such a great resource on this forum. Do you happen to know off the top of your head what size the two mounting screws are to attach the rear heater to the floor?
Hey pigmony, I am going to Ace Hardware in a minute and I will take one of the mounting bolts and get back to you on the size after I find it at Ace.

Here you go, the exact size and length bolts I took out of my 40 for the rear heater!

I was thinking that if your hoses are too short you could go to Ace and but a foot of cooper tubing that would fit inside you existing and new added heater hose, plus 4 H20 clamps. Then cut two cooper tubes to about 3.5" each and use them as couplers? Then you can just add from your existing hose to the rear heater mounting bracket without replacing both of your older hoses?
Just a thought.

Good luck!

I've been moving tools back and forth between my pickup and my 40 and it's annoying. So I got a start at putting together a basic tool set to live in the 40. I made this tool roll with some extra material to help keep things tight and it seems to be a fair bit quieter than my old one. I call that a success. Next up will be a pouch for sockets and a pouch for wiring tools and spares.

Took the plunge and rebuilt my first knuckle. Not to bad. Assuming I didn’t mess something up. One more step to being ready for summer!

As long as the top and bottom shims went back to where they came from and you got the wheel bearing adjustor and locking nut correct you should be good to go! Like you said not too bad just messy!

Good on ya McCracken! That’s good inspiration for us foot draggers. My knuckle rebuild kit has been sitting on the garage floor for six weeks. I hit the knuckles w moly this past weekend, but I need to get to that job this year! Of course I keep finding other jobs to do first. I’m really putting that off. But again, way to go!

Ugh, I need to do that too. About how long did it take you?

Sounds like all the 40 owners need to meet up and have a knuckle maintenance party.

Drewwwwww! I need your help on some wiring problem with my windshield wipers on my 40 so I can start tearing it up!!! PM me, PLEASE!

Took me 12 hours including a lunch break and a full brake bleed at the end. I’m a pretty detail oriented person so a few times I had gaskets in the wrong order or forgot a piece and had to back track. That and I think I read the manual 17 times through the process hahah.

One question I do have..do I NEED to do the passenger side now that I did driver side? It’s not leaking or showing signs of needing replacement like the driver. And even my driver side seemed to be in great shape once I got in there..

12 hours for 1 side?

4-5 hours total here after a few times it is pretty routine

I would do the other side also, 1 main reason is to atleast do the wheel bearings, when was the last time they were looked at? just go all the way in and then both sides are done for many years. and after doing 1 side it is all fresh in your head to do the other.

Paul nailed it. First side 12 hours, second side... 2 hours :D

All joking aside, I repack my wheel bearings every year or so. It's not a hard job but it is messy. Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters has an awesome kit that has it all... makes it easy to one stop shop.

Good on you for jumping in! It's great info for when you are on the trail or down the road from home.

Here's a link for anybody else who might need to do this in the future. Scroll down a bit. Rebuild kits are showing as out of stock at a number of places right now.

Replaced my front lateral control rod bushings on Sunday. When putting the lateral control rod back in I noticed I had developed the very well documented crack below the steering gearbox. Got the gearbox out of the way, cleaned up the frame, back gouged the crack and did a triple pass while using a map torch to heat before and help cool slowly after the fact. Glad I caught this when I did and not while going around a bend on some mountain pass somewhere. Truck drives way better now. If anyone else has an 80 and isn't sure where to look for that crack if you've wheeled your 80 for years please let me know I'd be happy to show you where you hopefully don't have a crack
