I found an old marine vhf Uniden I had for the boat.
It is an Atlantis 250. Will it serve?
What are you using?

Depends on what I am using it for and where I am, who I am with and what they use, could be Yaesu VX-6R submersible, Baofeng (vafangoo) 82V or 5RE, or Viper radio.

Bill is talking about a Uniden Atlantas 250 it looks like. VHF is the spec, which ranges from 30-300mhz. That overlaps the HAM frequency ranges, but iirc, the ocean designated radios are not permitted to transmit on HAM bands. Don't really know for sure.

Do you need a FCC license to use that radio on the water? You need a FCC license to operate a HAM radio on the 2M band, which is 144.000 MHz to 148.000 MHz.

Ah, gotcha. There is a thread going on on the Communications page about using marine band radios, and yes it is illegal to operate a marine band radio on land, unless you are within a certain distance from the watercraft and using it as ship-to-shore. Its all FCC CFR stuff. It will work, but its not legal.

i have a simple yes or no question

OK thanks it should work then
I'm not worried about the FCC. Ever heard the Steve Earle song?*
But I will be working on the Operator License, that is an eventual rqmt when I go back to sea.
For now in the woods it should suffice when I learn how to work it.
I will buy a Yaesu or a Baofeng for a secondary, loaner and for Jeri and I to use as walkie talkies.
What is the best i.e. cheapest that will be adequate for that, since we're here.
Finally I believe the license is only required if I use my Uniden to transmit on certain prohibited channels that are dedicated to maritime.
* This might have to be deleted but this:

1. No license required to operate that VHF marine radio on a recreational craft on the coast. Foreign ports, commercial, and ships are another story and out of my area.

2. You mention using the VHF and Baofeng's as walkie talkies. That's not legal either, especially on ham frequencies. You could put them on the FRS frequencies and be almost legal but still technically not because of type acceptance, power, and the detachable antenna. but at least you'd be legal to talk on those frequencies (the baofang will do it, not sure about the marine radio).
(edit.. looks like that VHF radio is programmed with specific channels between 156 and 162 mhz which won't work well other than those specific marine and weather channels.)

3. If you plan to use the VHF or a Baofeng to talk just a little bit while on the trails... I will not talk to you and hope no one else here would participate in illegal radio use.
Yes, I take it seriously partially because I value my extra class ham license and don't want to loose it (it took some studying), and partially because I respect the people who are into the radio hobby and want to keep the frequencies open, not unlike the off-road community protecting trails and access.

If I can do anything to help you get a ham license just let me know and I'll be glad to do what I can and be glad to have more people in the hobby. The tech license is not that hard and costs about $15 for 10 years.

Thanks. I'd rather be legal. I'll just put the marine unit back in storage, get a Baofeng or the other favorite.

Sean thanks. I have a Beofeng on the way and the next step is to start licensing. I will eventually want to work up to a full HAM license so set me started if you will.
I see you are in Raleigh, I am in GVL so I won't be able to meet up with you until maybe some Uwharrie event but maybe you know someone down here that is tied in.

dang it that's twice here I"ve gotten double posted.
And I can't remember where the delete is in this forum.

If you don't see the word DELETE next to REPORT and BOOKMARK on the bottom line of your post then you can't delete. I think that's a Silver Star benefit ($20 annual to the powers that be).

That's great. Quick version is that there's a pool of multiple choice questions put out by the FCC.
Each test is just questions pulled from that pool. Question Pools Technician pool is 426 questions.
There are 35 on the test and you have to get 26 right to pass. The pool/test is changing July 1, they do that sometimes to update/correct questions but I think most of them stay the same.
HamExam.org: Technician Exam Flash Card
HamStudy.org: Technician class Ham Radio practice tests, ham radio flash cards, and ham radio question pool.
others might have more/better links.

The test is actually put on by approved groups of volunteers that administer the tests. Once you can pass the free online sample tests you just need to find a local group who's giving the test. Raleigh's pretty active and there's someone doing it a 2-3 times a month.

If I can answer any questions just post here or PM me or catch me anytime we make it to Uwharrie.
