What exactly do you clean in the MAF? (1 Viewer)

What part is supposed to be cleaned? I took mine off today (not by the little screws) but I couldn't figure out what needs to be cleaned? Also...does the 92 have the same MAF ? Thanks

There really isn't any reason to clean the maf. I guess you could wipe it out and clean any dust or oil out of it, but it wouldn't serve any purpose. On cars with a heated wire type airflow sensor it is important to keep it clean, but ours isn't.

Well I assume you mean the VAF meter, since that's what both your vehicles in your signature have.

There's nothing to clean on them though.

First of all the 91-94 trucks don't have MAFs, they have vane style air flow meters or VAFs. MAFs have a hot wire setup that when dirty can be problematic but ours on the 95+ trucks are very difficult to clean.

Ahhh....that explains it...and it was spotless. I read about all the probs with MAF sensors being dirty and causing probs and was hoping that would be the fix for the acceleration prob with my 92...too bad.

IMHO, the biggest culprit of of dirty MAF sensors - heated wire - is running an oiled filter like a K&N. When I had K&N intake on my Tahoe, it sounded great, but I had to get in the habit of cleaning the MAF out every 3-6 months.

Did you check the resistance between the connections as per the FSM? Mine was bad and I had the same issues (sluggish accelerations + CEL codes 24 and 31). Replaced the whole MAF (got a used one here on Mud) and it's running great again now.

The 92 I'm having probs with is in WV and I wont be there till Nov for a month...so I'm trouble shooting from 2700 miles away. I've got no CEL on, so it's even harder to trouble shoot. I think I'm going to pick up a used TBS, VAF, and a FPR and replace them when I get there. Already replaced the engine mounts and O2 sensors, and that didn't help. All the symptoms point to one of those components. I'll Che k the wiring harness near the EGR too.
