465 is synchronized

if i were to run a 4spd with a doubler, then it'd be an h42 or h41 with the toybox and split case. you can't beat the toyota transmissions for smooth shifting, long lasting and very user-friendly gear-splits. even with a 42.
:steer:

SM465, like the SM420 is syncronized in gears 2-4. First gear is not syncronized.

I completely agree about the Toyota transmissions. The H41 is outstanding, the H42 is OK but limited by the 3.5:1 first gear.

Th H55f has been my all time favorite-but with a toybox or other doubler arrangement it would be extremely long, even in a Wagon.

Where the SM420/465 shine is for inexpensive low range seriously deep gearing.

It's not really that bad in a wagon. It's about 10" longer than an H55f and 13" longer than a four speed. In my BJ74 (102" wb stock) if I hadn't moved the front axle forward I could have used the same driveshaft front and rear.

Great info!!! Thanks a lot...was about to start searching for some length specs. I have about 1-2 inches i could push the engine forward if I went with push fans on the radiator + any stretching I could do on the rear suspension. :hmm:

Don't need AA to make doubler for NV4500. Get the face of the NP203 drilled and tapped. Use 23 or 32 spline NP203 input gear and use your choice of NP203 to LC adapter. If you use 23 spline NP203, you want Dodge NV4500 tailhousing. If you use 32 spline, you want Chevy NV4500 tailhousing.

I went this route in my pig using the 23 spline NV4500.:flipoff2:

Here are some numbers for you(most pulled from AA book. The SM adapter is memory):
Cast iron part of NV4500 is right at 12.5".
The OD housing(aka adapter) of the Dodge NV4500 is around 6".
The OD housing of a Chevy NV4500 is around 8"
SM465 is 12".
The SM465 to NP203 adapter is 4.5"

So overall difference between the two is 1-2".

So, while the NV4500 is long, it is almost in the realm of possibilities if you consider people have installed SM465-NP203 into sprung over FJ40s with only rear springs flipped.:meh:
