Throwing in the towel on the 40 and taking my Tundra. I’ve beat my head against the wall long enough to listen to the cruiser universe and leave it at home.

I got the distributor installed and timing set, look at the distributor and it’s dancing around like it has a bent shaft.
Then notice a coolant leak from the upper hose which split while setting the timing.

Sucks, but at this point I just want to go sit by the water in the sunshine and have an adult beverage.

Or 12

Hang in there. Every car can be a headache. But, at least you can vent it out here. Most of these 40s go thru extensive shake-downs, and that was a good time/place for the coolant hose to blow.

I agree. I am very thankful all of this happened before I got out of town and was 100 miles away from notable help.

“What a trip”

That’s what I wanted to be able to say when I got home tomorrow. Truth is I’m already here and it was kind of a buzz kill of a trip.

To say it didn’t have its ups would be a lie.

-I got to enjoy cold water (I have a thing for swimming in cold water).
-I got to spend time outside
- I got to have a solo dad minute
- My pup was happily along for the ride and always by my side
- I got to sit in the sunshine
- I got to walk around barefoot judgement free
- I saw wild horses, a bald eagle, beavers, a few deer, and about a dozen turkeys
- I got to have breakfast with the locals
- I went places I had not been
- I found places I want to take the family
- I enjoyed a glass of bourbon by the fire
- I went fishing with zero intention or anything but killing time
- I found a great campsite

I also found out I’m not built for hammock sleeping, or I’m not smart enough to.

I slept like trash last night, to the point I went and got in the truck and that seemingly made it worse. This is probably the biggest factor that I am not out again this evening. Had I my normal sleeping arrangements I would still be out.

So I learned from this and 1. Need to do more hammock sleeping research, 2. Not sleep in a hammock.

Tundra performed flawlessly, I covered about 350 miles (I went two hours out of my way and got pie).

I told myself 50mph on the backroads and front windows down. This was great.

Trd suspension is completely dialed on the tundras. Amazing how it handles the roads and dirt roads. Although I would sell it tomorrow and not look back. No soul and I “hate” the seats.

However it would have been so much more …. I can’t think of the word I want: if I had been able to take the 40.

So here’s a few pics of some water and my 14 year old lab dashound mix.

And last one of an old hospital ruin next to a spring that pops out of the rocks.

I wanted to swim here but there were multiple signs saying how fragile the ecosystem is.. quite frankly I think they were just discouraging people from the healing mineral waters that the hospital was based around.

Load up.
We’re doing a run west when we can align schedules.
You can pit stop here.

I can totally admire that you admit failure. That is success.

Diagonal.

The hammock thing can be tough.
My first full night after only napping in them was a surprise two night trip to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Sleep was not great but there was no alternative.
I still can’t sleep very well in one, unless it’s the only thing available.
Diagonal is just not enough.

I assume you had an Eno double or equivalent? The double really is more comfortable and allows you to get more diagonal.

It’s funny how some clarity and your mind work sometimes.

I was on the porch reading this morning as most mornings. Coffee in hand trying to focus when all the sudden in pops my brain. “Dummy just switch the shafts in the distributors and see if the pets store can get a hose and get it ordered”

After breakfast I did just that, swapped shafts, reset timing to base of 14* which is 25* mechanical and 36* vacuum.

No more dancing distributor, and I will have an upper hose this afternoon. Don’t mind the tape on the hose for timing setting.

Like a complete newbie I slept in my hammock like a newbie thinks to sleep in a hammock. Just lay down and go to sleep.

I did not know about this diagonal sleeping, or that a double would be better. Especially for larger frame people.

I also would need a more dedicated sleeping bag for the hammock. I did lay down a quilt under me as my back got cold in the 45 degree night and that helped tremendously. Once I did that I stayed warm enough that temperature wasn’t an issue. Just the full on cocoon sleep was not comfortable with my shoulders touching my ears for hours.

I feel like this would have been very good info to know and is definitely something I should have researched before taking off.

I’m returning the hammock I have now (if they will take it back) and will order a double in the future. I wanted this to work, I have a ground tent which isn’t my favorite. And my roof tents are 👌🏻 👌🏻 Especially the hard shell quick pitch. But that isn’t really a 40 option currently, and I’m not sure I want it to be.
What I wanted out of a 40 trip is basics. Simple life. Slow down. “Back to the roots”

Also I took entirely to much stuff as always, and only took half of what I normally would.

I could have trimmed down to one storage box for food/ cook supplies, taking the tundra I did not need tools or my saw, I took my fridge because why not, I was not planning on taking it with the 40. No reason to for a couple days other than to keep food dry.

I did need my little folding saw I didn’t have. So mental note to find it or purchase another before I go somewhere again.

This is a great spot to explore. I can’t wait to go back.

Picked up my radiator hose. Which didn’t fit. However was an easy fix to make fit.

I need to sit down and build a parts list of little things like this and order so I can have proper parts.

I need the bypass hose as well, I noticed today it’s as old as the upper radiator hose was.

@clrussell Whose power steering pump mount are you using?

Successful first day back at work, about 15 miles total today and it runs better than ever. I’m sure I was having distributor problems for a while, if not the whole time.

Fired right up this morning, ran about half choke for a minute then backed choke down and let it idle for about 10 minutes before I took off. Heater was starting to get toasty before I left the house.

I’m glad to have it back going.

Delicious

Actually driving out to the school last night reminded me I do have a “small” problem.

I took the speedometer apart and lubricated it before my trip. Now there is no bouncing of the speedo, however it reads about 10 mph faster than it did.

Not sure what I did there.
