Does anyone know if it would be alright to just use the original Toyota Transmission with the 4BT?

Most Diesels run out of breath at @ 2,800-3,000 rpm

Your 4 speed is a 1:1 in 4th with NO option to use 5th.(a 5sp has the option to use 4th)

Unless you run big'ol tires or drop down to 3:??'s (then everything down low in the revs will suffer), you have a recipe for a high RPM, out of the power band operating motor.

It can be done though, you'd just have to live with it. Forget about 60-65 and up mph. And a little less mpg than anticipated.

55mph w/ 4:11's and 33's

55 x 4.11 = 226 / 33 = 6.85 x 336 = 2,301 rpm's at 55mph (IF the TC is 1:1 IIRC its not)

Sorry man , it's just not easy and it's not cheap. If you do it, do it right and don't do a hack job. Just get a commuter (small car, motorcycle), save money and get your parts together. Durning that time you can do your research online and figure out what should work, why, and what probably won't.

Tapage did a good basic explaination and is wise about the details. All the details will add up in time and more $$. Unless it is strictly a trail rig, you need an overdrive auto or manual, especially if you are concerned about the cost of gas and your current mileage. IMO diesels are better than gasser if set up right, but if setup poorly there will be little or no gain in going diesel and it'll be $$ thrown out the window.

I think im in over my head.........What about using the original transmission in the FJ40 with the 4BT.........so i dont have to mess with the transfer case?? thanks

Buy yourself a diesel truck if you must have a diesel. Come back to the 40 when you have the cash.
Most B engines from Canada will have high mileage if you can actually find the real mileage.
IMO you would be better off buying a good core and rebuilding it.
A good rebuild will have 20 years ahead of it.

Asuming H42 or H41 both trannys are 4 speed, and yes can handle the 4BT powa .. but are you relize the importance of 5 speed tranny in a turbo diesel setup as the 4BT .. ?

Less rpm in this stup it's better .. or huge bigger tires .. since are less popular and much more expensive, you light bolt in a 5 speed tranny and the lowest gearing posible ( that it's 3.70 in Cruiser Axles ) in order to keep your rpm lower as posible and safe diesel .. = $$$ = swap that woth.

You probable think ..

Bahh those old guys, are talking like my father ..

Should be yes .. but I'm not that old ( mmm well I thought :D ) .. I'm 31 and know about time, money and effor involved in a swap with student budget .. all of us know that and we are trying offer you the wide view of the issue ..

I hope this help ..

Thanks for the help, I really do appreciate it. It seems as if I will have to save money and pay off loans..... bummer. Possibly get a diesel pickup. I will definitely keep my eyes and ears open and learn as much as I can though and hopefully someday I will be able to own my diesel 40 landcruiser. Thanks again!

I am also a college student in the exact same predicament. I am looking at going with a 2H diesel engine into the fj40. It uses the same tranny as the 2F, the only downside is you lose both torque and hp, but not much. Plus if biodiesel is the way your looking to go this will be the cheapest as you don't need an adapter plate or the lift to accommodate the deeper 4B engine. My plan is to go with the 2H for now and when the cash comes along switch to the 4B. Good luck man!

Its good to hear another student trying to do the same thing. Well I was going to go biodiesel but i dont think its going to happen just like he said earlier between how busy I am, I dont think I will even have time to make biodiesel. I am currently going for Secondary Education Broad field Science which pretty much is just a fancy way that they call a Lutheran high school science teacher. Student teaching begins next spring then im done!

I understand that biodiesel does take a significant amount of time and that if I am planning on going that route I must understand what I am getting myself into. I am a junior studying mechanical engineering in Socorro, NM. If you've never been to Socorro, it's a college and a bunch of desert for 100 miles in any direction. All I have going on is school and an fj. Good luck with your student teaching and the Cruiser.

Best of luck to you, and I hope the biodiesel processing works out for you. Have fun with the cruiser. take care

DO I need a SOA kit or would a standard SUA lift work because they are easier to install. Would it allow the 4bt to fit and not have oil pan to low?

I am wondering about the SOA conversion too? I have a 4bt marine engine sitting outside of my shop with a flat 4" deep oil pan, It looks to me like it would clear with a standard 4" SUA lift? There are alot of different pan arrangements used in different applications, maybe a flat pan wouldn't work on inclines?
