Greg where"s that Vintage heater ?
Still on the floor, waiting for me to drill holes.
But i did put my rear window back in and made it stay up with some scrap lumber...

Jump-started it...3-times, w/ my new booster-battery I got to buy for myself for my birthday. Haven't driven the 55 enough to keep the battery charged and a trip to work (10-min), the doc's office (10 min) and the hardware store (10 min) aren't enough to charge it up. (Well isn't that a geographical oddity? 10 minutes from everywhere!)

Nice to not to have to ask for a jump-start. Seems people aren't as willing to do that anymore.

If I had room to park the 55 in the alley, I would keep it plugged in too...as it is, I have to park on the street and run an extension cord out across the sidewalk from my front porch which is not ideal, but has been done. I probably over-spec'd the one I got. It says it will do 8-liter gas and 6-liter diesel so it did the 3.9 liter 1F just fine.

So ?????? On my 2016 Toyota ,or any computer control vehicle , I worry about damaging something ,?????
What would be you guys advice on jump starting with newer cars ? I

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Seems like the owner's manual would have guidance on that. I don't see an issue with it except maybe an electric car or a battery that's hard to get to...had to look in my neighbor's car's owners manual once, just to find her battery. I felt like a dumbass standing there trying to give her a jump and couldn't find the battery. Turns out a Volvo Cross Country Wagon's battery is in the trunk near the spare tire  .

That being said, I usually hook up the cables to both cars and don't trust the other party to hook up the cables.

Replaced the main wiring harness grommet with a new FJ80 one. It was a little too big but easy to trim. Hopefully that will keep all/most of the heat from pouring through from the engine bay.

Went for a test drive as part of shake in for the camshaft I replaced several weeks ago. A little over a 100 miles so far. Camshaft et al seems good but…

…today while driving a weird noise that sounded like the speedo cable. Also the speedometer would jump to 70+ every now and then while I was going 40. Checked the speedo connection underneath and all OK. Pulled the gauge cluster and that connection good too. Pulled the meter itself, hooked up to a drill, and can hear the whirring sound a little.

A lot of times those cars will have a + terminal up in the engine compartment that you can access. So you can use a ground on the engine and the + terminal and then no worries about vapors by the actual battery.

I need to head over to the 40 section and catch up on our camshaft threads.

Speedo - mine was quite gummed up. Not sure if sitting in the NM sun did that, or what, but I took mine apart and cleaned it - now mo betta: Instrument Clusters - will '70 cluster work in a '74? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/instrument-clusters-will-70-cluster-work-in-a-74.250989/page-2#post-3935155 (from 2008 - whoa!)

TJ - thanks for the links and sub links! I had found a speedo link with pictures maybe two years ago and bookmarked it, but clearly there are more insights. I have found the search capabilities of MUD lacking…or maybe it is me that is lacking! I find more on MUD using google.

When I first finished the restomod of my 1969, one thing that did not work was the odometer. The 1/10ths moved but that was it. The speedometer part worked great. I have the older screw in connection (see pic) and since I put in a 2F, H55F, and split transfer case, I had a cable shop make up a custom speedo cable with both correct ends. Next step was to get a mechanical converter to register the correct speed since I have 33” tires. Anyway, I bought a second gauge cluster thinking I would open that one up and play with the odometer mechanism to learn on. Well that gauge using the drill test worked for both speed and odometer. Two problems: 1) it was crusty faded 2) it had the newer style connector for the speedo cable so would work with my cable.

So I put it on the shelf for another day. Now that my original gauge is acting up, I pulled it off the shelf again to see what options I have. Cleanup the crusty working gauge and get a new speedo cable OR tear apart the original gauge and see if I can get both the odometer to work plus fix the weird speedometer noise and fluctuation where the needle bounces to 75 periodically.

I am also thinking about putting together pictures and a master thread for gauges sort of like the bottle jack one on MUD.

Always hook the dead battery first so if there’s any sparking it‘s at the good battery.
