I think the mechanic I know well might be coming back here to PV MX for the Christmas break.

He really is the only one that I trust to do this work besides myself to do this TB service. I would be willing to do and i'm capable of completing this work, but main issue is that I don't have access to a copious amount of tools needed to do this.

He pulled of those plastic cam covers to inspect the TB. Was last changed out in 2006 at 121K miles, the TB looked great no cracking/fraying or any oily residue.

So anyway, what have been the labor prices on (I have all parts to complete the work) changing out the crank seal, two cam seals, and TB service?

Not sure if some dealers would try to charge extra for changing out the clutch fan/fan bracket/accessory belt tensioner and idler pulley with new parts. Obviously all this stuff has to come off anyway for the service.

The Toyota dealer gave me an estimate of $575 in writing.

If completing this service on a 1998 withe 186K miles in good condition.
What is the market value?

I had this work done (plus the water pump and drive belt tensioner) about 6 weeks ago at Walnut Creek Toyota here in the Bay Area. Mileage was around 168K on a 2000.

Labor only for the TB service (not including WP) was $590. The crank seal was part of the TB package. The drive belt tensioner, drive belt, TB idler pulley and bearing were replaced for parts cost only - no additional labor.

So it sounds like the 575 is not too far off, at least from what I paid. I got estimates from a couple of other local dealerships beforehand and this one was right in the middle.

Mine was about the same - $550 or so IIRC.

Sounds about right, just got a quote today from Tires Plus for 1200 including parts, soo maybe 1000 just in labor??
Tires Plus? Think twice about a tire shop or quick lube place doing technical work on your vehicle.

^^ what he said.

No, this was a dealer. Parts were ordered from Beno, and IIRC were about $450.

Go with the Dealer route. You can get a good discount on parts if your order from Beno, CruiserDan, etc.

There are plenty who have done their own timing belt, and more, but most of us would rather have Mr. T take care of it.

Some tire shops have dedicated engine mechanics at some tire shop that could handle this type of work, but be careful.
If you are referring to Tires Plus in the (from this area) Fairfax Va area, I say DON"T go to those places as they are a fast tire replacement operation. If something does go wrong like a leaking water pump from loose bolts ect, these types of places are going to be hard to backup their work.

I had an issue back in the day with an express lube place in Sterling VA where they did some (heads/valve work) engine work on my vehicle. It ran way worse than when I dropped t off. They botched it all up so bad I had to buy a new motor.

Now today I am very skeptical of (check them out) any shop before letting them do any work. Now here in PV Mexico everyone claims to be a mechanic at all these little shops. I'm sure I could get one of these shops here to do the TB work around for around $200, but not sure how far I would make it of the shop.

Being my LC is from the USA and having them do the TB work here in PV MX, if something does go wrong what would my recourse be? That the question I have been trying to get answer to, but no has yet answered the question as of yet.

The dealer lets you bring your own parts? I have never heard of this but it's a good way to save some money on the job.

As long as it's genuine Toyota parts and not aftermarket. I just told them I bought them their at the parts department.
