what 60/62's can with FF rear axle

THATS CAME WITH (edit header) starting to think about the wife and kids saftey (not that i have already)
and after loosing my left rear at a slow speed the other night.(thank God i was driving)
i would hate to have this happen to my wife on the highway or anywhere for that matter.

SO!

are there any particular 60/62's that came with a FF rear axle?
or are they just a import thing?

what would one expect to pay?

They are an import thing. I think the best bet is to get one from Spector. Of course, that depends on where you are because shipping can get steep. I believe they run $450-$500. You should probably rebuild it while you have it out. Spector or Kurt at Cruiseroutfitters has the kit for that. Another nice thing about the full float is that all of the bearings are the same front and rear. Be sure to get the SST to remove the rear hubs.

G&S Cruiser Parts usually has them in stock. I had one swapped into my 60 that came from G&S via a guy on the East coast. I actually saw one in Craigslist about 2 years ago - FOR FREE! $300 to $450 should get you one.

I actually looks very kewl witht the sliders...

SST= Special Service Tool, I believe. In this case it is a special socket to get the retaining nut off of the spindle. The nut for the rear full float is round, unlike the nuts for the front, and therefore requires the service tool and a torque wrench to tighten and loosen.

i just bough a FF from cruiserparts for $450. They get a bunch in on occasion...

i got my rebuild kit from kurt, a great guy to deal with. Can dealers sell the SST? how much $$? or where else can i get one?

I have had a good experience shopping with Kurt as well. The SST can be purchased at: http://toyota.spx.com/ Yet, as Mace pointed out, you can remove the rear retaining nut and use two front nuts to keep it redundant and use only one tool. i've never tried this but it makes great sense.

Hmmm, I have never thought of using front spindle nuts on the rear FF. Does the rear axle spindle have the rear axle groove machined into it? The one that keeps everything from rotating as one assembly?

I believe it does have a groove as the rear also has a retaining washer to keep it from rotating. Whether or not they are the same size I don't recall.

Your absolutely right... its been awhile since I was in a FF... I have some spare FF retaining rings, etc, I'll match them up to my spindle nut kits and see what I think. Cool idea for sure, though I actually like the OE setup, it works great with the tool

Kurt is the man! Look around and put feelers out. A few are out there but plan on $700+ for it fast; $400ish eventually. VERY good mod.

I found it easiest to remove the nuts until they are flush with the end of the bolt, then tap them with a brass drift and a hammer. Give a bolt a few taps then rotate hub to the next bolt, all the way around. I've done two axles and they all came out fairly easily.

depends how fubar the studs are. the FF i swapped in had cone washers rusted to the studs: PB blaster, time, and vise grips were the solution. i popped a few off with a 5lb sledge hammer sans brass drift. swing HARD.

if they're just stuck, the same brass drift trick you use for the front works just fine. in fact, the front studs and cone washers work for the rear. same with the flange gasket. gotta love the effort to reduce the parts count

Ya'll got me curious, so I checked one of the FF's we have on the stand. The front retaining rings will not work on the rear. While the rear spindle do have the groove at the top, that is where the similarity ends....other then the bearings. The spindle on the rear FF is larger from the get go, and does not taper up like the front.

I've heard a brass hammer is available, and you can use a little shock force to pop out the cone washers by hitting on the side, but I've not sourced, tried and confirmed for myself.

Good detective work... I pulled a FF spindle nut and compared it to the front, the front is a couple mm smaller than the rear... I am trying to post a pic but my comp. won't recognize my camera???
