We had back to back days of decent rain and on my way home tonight I started having issues with my driver's heated seat not shutting off no matter what mode the heated/cooled button was on (or even off). Pulled the drivers door trim and noticed a lot of water and both driver's and passenger carpets are pretty wet. The drivers side electrical canal under the trim had water pooled up towards the front of it. The canal on the passenger side didn't seem as bad but I noticed water hire up on the passenger side.

I read the threads on cowl issues but could that also cause water on the driver side that badly? I just purchased the truck from Seattle in April and have had to clean off sap and pine needles off the roof and cowl before so I'll start checking drains tomorrow. Although I didn't feel any wetness around the sunroof and headliner. The windshield seems to be original based on Toyota markings but I can't say for sure.

There was a musty smell from the rear climate control when I got it but I fixed that by running lysol through the intake in the truck, maybe that was related to this.

Seeing as I'm already having electrical problems, what's the potential scale of damage here and best course of action?

A good old problem for all land cruisers. The glass may be original but still not installed correctly.
Sunroof drains are still clogged.
Clogged front AC drain. (I believe that full carpet under legs will be wet)
Smell from rear AC, clogged rear drain(not related to front leaking)

Water in drivers side probably isn’t the cowl, it’s the sunroof drains. Relatively easy to address that with a cleaning tool on amazon, but yes there is a risk of persistent damage to the connectors that were submerged in the water depending on how long they were like that.

Get the water out, dry things well, and consider opening the connectors to inspect the pins. If you got lucky the problems are caused by the water itself shorting circuits and not corrosion, yet.

Pulled the connectors and ran a fan overnight. I've unfortunately noticed some very light corrosion on driver and passenger junctions. What's the best method to tackle corrosion these delicate pins? Is the only long term solution to depin and clean the affected ones?

Still narrowing down the source but I believe it is the sunroof drains. I'll check them once the connectors fully dry and I can reconnect the battery but for now I pulled the A-pillars and noticed a little bit of debris and water in those channels.

From where I’m sitting I think you dodged a bullet. Some of these are so bad the pins disintegrate when the connectors are separated. Yours don’t look very bad.

I haven’t had to tackle this yet so I hesitate to detail what’s needed, plenty of others in this section have though. @Leaky2014 comes to mind

That's how I'm feeling too. Thankfully the heated seat issue started early otherwise this could've gone undetected for a long time.

Until I bought it in April this LC was in rainy Sea/Tac its whole life so I'm very surprised this isn't worse.

It could be as simple as living in a garage and being parked in one when/if the owner went to work. But yes, the heated seat issue saved your butt....

Looking at these pics, I agree you dodged a bullet.

This doesn’t look bad at all.

The leak should be from your front sunroof drains being clogged. It’s very common. Go get a cleaning tool and dislodge the debris causing the clog. Also, please be very careful not to push too hard and pop the drain hose off the pipe… you will need to drop the headliner to re-attach if you do that.

After you clear the clog, test it by running some water down the drain to ensure water is still not getting into the cabin.

If the leak is fixed, it really shouldn’t continue to corrode. I might touch it up with some alcohol and cotton ear swabs (very gently), let it all dry out, and plug in the connectors and drive along for many more miles.

I went through this several years ago, and would save you the trouble I went to fixing it. All you need to do is proactively dewater and treat the pins - all of them. CRC plastic safe electronic cleaner is what you need. I buy it by the case at Home Depot.

I had the dealership replace both the engine and cowl harnesses, because the sunroof drains were plugged and the water entry corroded all the connections between the two harnesses. If it had been my money, I would have taken a three day weekend, depinned the connectors, cleaned them and reconnected them.

It sounds like a lot of work, but it's just the same tedious task over and over again. Definitely doable and will save you a thousand dollars and, if you're unfortunate like me, 7 months waiting for Toyota's harness vendors to make the harnesses for you.

I was under the impression that if you have a cowl leak, the water leaks from the glovebox area down to the carpet. Not down the A-pillars. Please correct me if I’m wrong on that though.

I would start with the sunroof drain first and see if that fixes the leak. Fingers crossed the corrosion isn’t bad and once you dry everything out, all goes back to normal :)

You are correct. But the sunroof drains will end up there too, if they're really bad. I know my cowl seal was good, becasue I'd recently had the windshield replaced and it passed the leak test.

Oh really - that sounds like a nightmare. Gah - this is one of the flaws of the 200. I really wish they had an option to delete the sunroof to make these rigs last longer.

I’m guessing yours is all fixed now? (after probably paying in the thousands to get a new harness thrown in)

Good as new and leaktight. Like I said, it was an insurance claims and Allstate paid the bill. The connections between the two harnesses were pale green.

find, fix the leak, douche with deoxit, will be fine.
also check the fuse panels up under the dash, they can also be a problem with leaks.

Seems to be the sunroof drains. Tried to snake with some string trimmer line and electrical cable but didn't make it far before hitting some sort of blockage. It may just be a bend in the line since water is coming through but I ordered the brush tool off amazon so just waiting for it to arrive and try again.

Wish I could view the bottom of the drains but they seem to exit inside the rocker panel below the door? Unless I get my hands on a borescope I don't think I'll be able to tell if there's any blockage at the exit.

I've decided not to depin all those connectors unless the issues with the seats don't go away. I just let them full dry and then hit them with WD40 contact cleaner.

After you try the brush to clear the blockage, you can always take a bit of water and test that the drain is working properly where water drains underneath the vehicle and it’s not leaking into the cabin.

Looks like your blockage is right at the top, on that side at least. The pine needles are sticking out of the hole.

And the exit for the drains is behind the fender liner plastic, at the back of the wheel well. I believe there is some kind of nipple on the end so getting a scope in there could be difficult.

Cleaned the sunroof drains and ended up using a better purposed snake tool off amazon to get all the way through. I then hit the junctions with contact cleaner and called it good. Ended up taking a quick weekend trip down to Nashville and hit a ton of rain on the way but no issues!

I did notice through this process that the weatherstripping on the sunroof glass is in pretty bad shape and slightly deteriorating. It looks like the LX has a part number for this but the LC doesn't? Does anyone know if the LX weatherstrip is the same? Part number for the LX seems to be 63251-12190. Not set on replacing now (as long as it continues to drain properly) but curious if anyone has used that part on their LC.

I’ve had one sitting on the shelf for over two years while I procrastinate taking mine apart to see if it fits as you ask. I can’t see why it wouldn’t.
