Drove from Yosemite (Fresno area) along the 101 last week. Pismo beach is a must bring a tent and camp on the beach! Drove 6115 in 11 days camped between Phoenix and Tucson at a state park called picacho I believe is the name cool place.

Picacho Peak - takes about 1.5 hours to climb to the top - cool views

I can only say to stay off the interstates, I-5, etc.

The old saying " Interstates go everywhere, see nothing, and meet no one".

South of Seattle, head over to Tillamook, and stay on the coast all the way down, at least as far as Santa Rosa, CA. That's just my suggestion anyways, I love that drive!

I agree - did this in 1990

Just a reminder: The desert southwest can start to get hot by that time of year. Be sure your cooling system and A/C are in good shape.

Check out the Mojave Road.

Have fun!

If you decide to take highway one from SF down the Central Coast, I know a beautiful free camp about half way. Let me know if you'd like the location.
