I am looking at a 40th anniv. edition with relatively low miles and in apparent good condition, but there is no roof rack on the vehicle. I thought this would be standard, or was this a port/dealer installed option?

They were port installed as much of the junk everyone tosses off when they go wheeling ;). trailer hitch, running boards, wind dam on rear hatch, roof rack, alarms and wind dam on sunroof
Junks beater 40th didnt come with a roof rack (I think ???) or diff locks :flipoff2:

My 96 came with diff locks and leather from Japan but it skipped the port install "bling bling" station :D

It's actually preferable to find one w/o the crappy factory roof rack - it doesn't haul much anyway and you wont have to worry about rust issues (search to find out more). If you need to haul anything up there it would be much better to fit an aftermarket Thule/Yakima or expedition style rack ....

If it's in good shape you should buy it :D

Koffer is correct, roof racks were port installed - and usually poorly done at that. You - and anyone else - would be much better off without a factory roof rack. There are all manner of rust issues with the mounts on these things, especially if the truck has been in foul weather country for any length of time.

We have two 40th's in our stable; neither have roof racks - neither had wind dams, but one had running boards. Apparently there was an irregular pattern of port installed extras...

Not exactly.

95-97 models were EPA restricted on the number that could be equipped with roof racks, running boards, rear deflector and cargo mat. They were only installed at the port and only as a complete group.

Dealers were able to make an end-run around the regulations (except for the cargo mat and deflector) by buying un-marked versions directly from the vendors that supplied TMS and installing them at the dealer.
If a 95-97 has some but not all of these pieces that is how they got there.

As has been said, you are better off with out the factory rack. You WILL have rust under the attachment points if it does have a factory rack, even in the non-rust belt areas of the country.

My 40th has none of those......guess it got a way clean!

rsm,

Whine and complain to the seller that it is missing the "highly sought after" roof rack. Demand that the price be lowered by $1000.... then buy the truck and be very, very happy it doesn't have that POS.

Well I'll be.

I was wondering why the roof rack on my 40th looks a bit different than most of the others I've seen.

That's some interesting trivia, Dan. You should start a "Dan's trivia fact of the day" thread.
