It was a direct fit per another thread I read. Just made a spacer for under the battery out of a piece of starboard-like material I had lying around.

The OE-fit Platinum is:
59 Amp Hours @ 20
740CCA
100RC
48mo replacement, 100mo pro-rated
$220

This one was:
95 Amp Hours @ 20
850CCA
170RC
36mo replacement, unclear on pro-rated length
$180

Good deal or am I missing something?

Hmmm...Sears Die Hard Platinum model's warranty has been 4-year free (non prorated) warranty replacement + 100-month prorated warranty.

Sorry, maybe I wasn't very clear with my original post. The platinum is, as you said, 4-year, 100mo pro-rated. The Group 49 that I got is a DieHard Advanced Gold AGM. I guess my question is, other than the shorter warranty (36 mo), is it a "worse" battery than the platinum? On paper, it seems much better.

What makes the Sears Diehard Platinum 31M marine battery so awesome is the fact they are simply an OEM relabel of the Odyssey PC2150MS battery. Sears sells the battery for $279, and the same battery with an Odyssey label is $379. Better yet you can regularly catch the Sears on sale for 10% off, putting it at $250.

The Odyssey batteries are generally regarded as the best batteries in the industry. It's what our US military uses in a good amount of their vehicles.

With all that said, I'm sure the battery you picked up will serve you well for years to come, enjoy!

I too have the Diehard Platnium (Odyssey battery). That a great deal for our vehcles.

DieHard Platinum group 35 is the schnizzle!

My last battery was the same as the OP has listed. It worked well, but ended up dying prior to the warranty ending. I got three and a half years out of it. Because of the prorating, I was able to replace it with a platinum, which I would not have otherwise afforded.

Anthony.L, et al,

You gents seem to know a bunch more about batteries than I...

"Back in the day" the Sears Die Hard was THE battery to buy. I remember an old Hot Rod magazine article that recommended measuring your battery tray and purchasing the biggest size battery that would fit.

But over the years Sears Die Hard batteries have gotten increasingly expensive. (An 84 month pro rated warranty really isn't worth much when your replacing the battery after 5 years.)

Lately, (last five years or so) I've been buy my batteries from Wal Mart and have had generally good luck. I generally try and stick with one battery supplier.

I would appreciate your comments on the relative cost/benefits of Wal Mart vs the Die Hard Platinum, or other Die Hard variant. I have an '02 Ford Super Duty and the OEM batteries need replacement.

Please realize though if one of my vehicles doesn't start it's not a life-or-death situation as it may be in the case of the US military. For me it's a PITA and nothing more.

Thanks in advance...

one of the most critical factors in a battery is the CCA (cold cranking amps) the higher the number the better. For the size battery that will fit in your truck you want the highest CCA you can find.

At one time the auotzone gold top batteries were rated well.....most of the batteries were/are made by exide I believe.

For the roads/trails I travel with my LC I needed a sealed battery and one that would hold up to big amounts of vibration. So far my Odyssey battery investment (2) have been worth the $$$; but I'll feel alot better about making that statement after another 5+ years of use ;). And the 4 Lifeline batteries I had in our former trailers performed equally to expectation/satisfaction.

I tried 3 different Exide batteries including two "Orbital" models. They all failed in less than 2-years including one that leaked all over the engine bay and down the frame.

If it weren't for the off-road jostling I could get by with a less costly battery choice. So it like so many decisions we make for our rigs is all about the application.

Like others have said, it's all about the application. If I was buying batteries for my daily driver then it would absolutely be Walmart or Costco where I did my shopping. Costco has some great battery prices and warranty.

However for the LC, and where I spend countless hours on washboard forest roads and jeep trails money is no object for something that gets me home. Keep in mind not all Sears "Platinum" are created equal, that is simply a marketing term. We are talking specifically about the "Platinum Marine" batteries which are made for Sears by Odyssey battery and are generally regarded as the best money can buy.

For information purposes, Walmart, Advanced Auto, Optima, and many other many other auto parts stores battery's (not Sears though) are made by Johnson Controls.

I just had to replace a battery from O'reily Auto parts after 19 months. The good news is that they gave me almost full credit for it.

Sorry to drag up an old thread. I am looking to get a pair of the DHP group 35, but don't see the platinums (except the marine) on the sears website only the golds. Is sears discontinuing the regular platinums? I also cannot find both terminal arrangements only the right side positive. If I do a google search, I get this:

http://www.sears.com/diehard-platinum-automotive-battery-group-size-35-price/p-02851035000P

but cannot find the same battery if I browse the sears website. I really don't want the group 31M as they are 75lbs each, but want the redundancy of the dual battery setup, hence the group 35.

sdnative - I too can't find the Die Hard Platinum auto batteries listed on the Sears website BUT when I click on your link, I can add it too cart and checkout. Keeping fingers crossed that I can pick it up at my local sears. By the way 10% off today at sears website but the kmart website has the 10% off the Die Hards until 5/27.
