I'm Stefon (ABE3) and serve in the U.S. Navy. I'm currently stationed in Yokosuka, Japan on the USS Ronald Reagan due to the hull swap). My obsession with Land Cruisers started when I purchased a 94 80 Series with a bad rear end for $300. Its been long gone but I recently purchased a very clean and well maintained 97 LX450 (which I've yet to drive).

I was TDY'd for 90 days, from Wheelus AB, Libya, to Ramstein AB (near Kaisersalutern), in 1969. best 90 days of my Libyan tour!! Drank a bit of schnapps and jaeger and took a lot of train trips to various places in Cold War West Germany.
While stationed (accompanied) with NATO, at AFCENT, Brunssum, The Netherlands, in the mid 80s, we took a lot of car and train trips all over West Germany, Holland, Belgium and France... Along with. Americanized shopping trips to the larger Exchange and Commisary at Bitburg AB, GE and Ramstein and Rhein-Main or Franfurt am Main or somewhere in that area.
For NATO, I spent all exercises at various locales (Boerfink, GE; Maastricht, NL; SHAPE, BE: Mons, BE; and some others I can't recall). Also spent non-exercise time at Chievres AB, BE; Gielenkirchen AB, GE; Mons; SHAPE; and others.
Great place to visit... Europe... Especially Holland and Germany!!
Sorry, I stepped on y'all's German experiences, but it's hard to keep my hand over my mouth, when it comes to visiting Europe!!
Edit: btw I think Ray Barracks was shut down several years ago. The end of an era...
ABE's work on the catapult and arresting gear systems for aircraft to take off or land on the ship. We finished moving the crew and our belongings to the Reagan so now we are performing maintenance on all of our equipment before going out for sea trials. Thanks for the complement on my 80!

You sir are correct about Ray Barracks closing down, I forget when, but it has been several years now. I managed to spend new years 2000 in Paris, they party a little different there!

Aah... So the hull is swapped... How long does it take to swap the hull on a carrier?
I assume that sharp young man with the mirrors on his feet is you... I don't recall a Navy uniform like that back in my day... But, I am colorblind... Still it looks more Marine to me...

it was so cloak and dagger, I felt like Jason Bourne, before Jason Bourne... I was always a Robert Ludlum fan... But, I digress. 
About 2 1/2 weeks for the whole process. And yes the young man in the peanut butters is me! I'll agree it looks similar to the Marine uniform, the best next to Blues!

Ah, Paris!!! Best big city I ever visited... Twice!!! But, never on New Years Eve...
But, we did party hearty with a lot of very good Dutch friends on 3 separate Oudejaarsavond (Old Years Eve)celebrations... Heavy on "party"... A river of Jong Genever ('young' Dutch Gin) and tray after tray of delicious food!! I remember great times... But, I stuck with white wine... I didn't have brain cells to waste!!

I was astounded that a carrier hull swap only takes 2.5 weeks!
Especially since CNN said, this morning, that it won't happen until 'late this year' and that the move to Japan hasn't yet happened.
Glad to see that news agencies don't know everything!

Hello, super newbie here. Kind of was cruising to see if there was a new members thread but this caught my eye first.
Name is Jared, and like everyone or mostly, I am a vet. Did 5 years in the Army (3 active, 2 in reserves). Was a cargo specialist (88H) on active duty, mostly running forklifts, kalmars, or anything with wheels mainly. Went to the reserves and reclassed to IT (25B). Decided to take my disability over the reserves so now I am IRR for a couple years. Took the chance to get in as many schools as I could while I was in to get the best experience of it all. Serving was one of the best experiences of my life. It definitely made me grow up from the kid I was and into an adult, and real quick too. I have a 2010 FJ Cruiser, love it to death and wouldn't trade it for anything. Hope to maybe meet some of you guys some day and maybe hit some trails!
