My buddy has a 93 with that particular moulding and I saw a 97 model year with the same molding here in the SF Bay area and no, it was not a colloector's edition or 40th anniversary. I think a few models came like that from Japan.

$400 eh ? Maybe someday ... until then maybe I can get my Line-x guy to spray some extra thick stripe along that area . Crap dries within 5-10 seconds or close , so you could just keep re-edging in the area for that bevelled look I suppose .
I saw it over in Mt. Pleasant. It was over on HWY 17 just past the Walmart but not quite to town center yet. Looked pretty much stock except for the mouldlings and rear doors. No lift or anything like that. Im gonna keep a lookout for it and try to talk to the guy next time I see it.
PS....Trapper is that your awesome looking 40th that is over in West Ashley a good bit...with the basket on top...one of the few if not only lifted 80's in Charleston.
My 93 has em'.... built 10/92, cloth interior w/ factory lockers. The mouldings were obviously manufactured for the rear side marker to be installed... which is US only(?)... as every pic of a non USA Cruiser with them does not have this marker, maybe a few early US versions received em'?
Unfortunately we are not lucky to have a ton of modified cruisers running around. Most of ours are stock with Michelins still on them with kids screaming in the back seats. You get odd looks around here if you are driving one covered in mud.
The only 80's to get factory installed side mouldings in the US were 40th's and collectors. This version of the moulding is plain (no FOUR WHEEL DRIVE on the front door mouldings). Any others you see were either dealer or owner added. The mouldings do appear in the US catalogs. The "FOUR WHEEL DRIVE" version is the earlier one and the shade of grey is slightly lighter. Either set can be fitted to any US 80 by knocking off the locating pins as previously mentioned.

My Australian 80 ('97) has the side trim with "4 Wheel Drive" printed in it, and my brother's US 80 ('97 CE w/lockers) has it w/o the 4 Wheel Drive reference.
I can't confirm the difference in shades of grey, as I will (probably) never see the cars side by side...
I saw it again today this time in a parking lot. Sorry no pic because I was in my Bronco today and did not have my phone or camera. Here are more details. Left hand drive. Cloth interior (looked like 91-92 seats). No 3rd row seats. No airbags. 16" Steel wheels. Exhaust looks different than mine. Bigger diameter maybe. VX emblem on back. No rear side marker lights. There was something under the headlights (looked like washer nozels maybe). Had front marker lights. Grill looked normal no "turbo" written in it. Automatic tranny. Waited around for about 10 min waiting for someone to come out but no luck. Got a lot of odd looks as I was crawling around a car in a parking lot. Gotta be an import or someone who is really spending a lot of $$$$ trying to JDM up an 80.
Hey Mooker, unfortunately I don't make it across the river to Mt. Pleasant very often. Maybe I'll catch it somewhere else.
I do have a lifted 40th and I live in West Ashley but no basket on top. I had yakima racks for my bikes but they were continually being ripped off of the truck by offending branches and trees in the woods. I've recently removed everything and am now sporting the slick top. I've only seen one other lifted 80 down here. It was white and had an ARB on the front and a lightbar on the roof. I passed him on HWY17.
Yeah not many lifted ones. I have a 40th that I am about to lift as soon as i find someone close who will do the labor for a reasonable price. Low Country wants almost $700. Im gonna run the 295's that I have now wish I could go 35's but no money to regear for a long time.
