Forgiveness

First off, forgive me if this is not the right place to inquire. First time on the site, and first FJ40 restoration project.

I have a 78 FJ40, with a Weber carb and am struggling to make the linkage work, it was this way when i purchased the vehicle but seems to be missing a part.

The pedal has link that goes through firewall, then connects to the linkage, this is where it looks as though something is missing, the linkage to carb is very loose at end close to firewall so it appears to not work properly.

Is this the problem you are discussing here or is it another problem all together.

Welcome.

Do you have a cable or rod linkage?

Please post up a couple pictures of what you are working with.

The pivot bracket that bolts to the firewall has a rubber grommet to keep the horizontal linkage rod centered in the bracket and reasonably tight.

AFAIK, the grommet is still available at the dealer. 90480-something. All grommets start with this prefix. If the dealer gives you a number that starts with something else, tell him to look again.

Or just call C-Dan and get it right the first time!:)

I have a similar problem: I wish change tha stock carburator with a Weber one; I sent an email to cruiserparts.net but they said that by now they don't have any Weber and that to them original carburator works fine; I saw that they have also a Rochester in their catalogue...

What do you suggest? Keep the original carburator? search for a new one?

You have PM!:grinpimp:

Linkage is WAY better than trying to rig some sort of cable to the carb. There is much less slop. It sounds like you have too much movement through the firewall or the ball joint clips are loose. I tightned mine with aircraft wire and it works very smoothly.

oem pedal and oem cable from a '71 to a bracket that came with the carb.
yeap that's rigged.

how rigged is that?

I have a Weber 38mm with the mechanical linkage. I got it from Man-a-Fre about 11 years ago and cannot remember exactly how the linkage was set up. Anyway, I have a spring on the linkage that pulls out the "slop" and have not had any problems with it. I tried to replace the electric choke iwth a manual one and that did not work out so I changed back but otherwise the Weber has served me well. I turned over on my side once and after I was flipped back over she started right up. I dislike the open air cleaner and am currently in the process of going back to the stock air cleaner.
