Water pump leak common?

Ryan at On The Road Again Mobile Mechanics just did mine for about $800 with a new serpentine belt. He frequently has a banner ad on this site. He has also done work on my 100 series. If you are in Northern Va I highly recommend him.

Only water pump needs replacing with fresh coolant. No need to mess around with timing chain. Other items to consider are belt tensioner and serpentine belt.

I'm not sure it's model year related?

A "friend" in the business indicated the issue relates to the new pink (not the standard Toyota red) used in the newer models, supposedly it is tough on that front water pump seal and much "thinner" relative to the red. Replacement sub 100k is normal.

Turns out my 08 200 (95k) needs a pump, stalactites down the front of the motor. I'll put in a new AISIN pump and red coolant.

Had mine replaced few weeks ago along with the serpentine belt and new coolant. all good
Thanks

Maybe, Toyota started using a new seal in the later model years?

Its across the board on the Lexus vehicles. I see leaking water pumps/water pump failures on all of them. Mileage will vary. ES350s, RX350s, IS250/350, GS350, LS460, and LX570s. Not so much on the newer inline 4s. On the timing belt motors, you'll get your usual leak at the weep hole with mileage but nothing like timing chain motors.

It turned out the WP in my 08 had already been replaced 2 years ago at 51k (74k now) and this leak was from a hose. When I looked for the leak I couldn't find it, assumed it was the WP and I didnt have the time to tackle that myself so I took it to Toyota of Greer, SC and had them do it. They started taking things apart and found the leaky hose, said it looked like whoever replaced the WP didnt replace a clamp properly and it finally failed. I was thankful (and surprised) they didnt just replace the pump and charge me for it. Germain Toyota of Naples, FL is the place that did the WP replacement, or tried to. (It doesn't surprise me, I just bought it from them about 2 months ago and they screwed up on everything during the buying process too.)

Water pump swapped. Not that bad of a job and it was certainly time, 95k fwiw. I knew it was leaking when I purchased it but this had been leaking for a minute

We used an AISIN pump (our part# EGW09491) whgich included the water (thermostat) inlet o-ring and of course the water pump gasket. Additionally I replaced the fan bracket (fan clutch bracket) as mine had some noticeable wear. The bearing could likely be replaced but I didn't want to wait on tracking down the bearing, I'll hang onto the old bracket to attempt to r&r. I had the tensioner pulley and idler pulley on hand just in case, both of mine spun clean and had no play. Finished it off with a new OE belt and more Toyota pink.

Whats the expected cost for replacing water pump and drive belt?
I was quoted ~$990
$420 Parts + $570 Labor (~5hrs estimated)
$219 Pump
$146 Belt
$54 Coolant (3gal)

Drive belt is cracking a little but figured since they are removing it I'd replace it now.
I have 2009 with 97k mi

I gave that +-
No worries now

Pump can be scored for 1/2 that price (Part# EGW09491 (Fits 2008-15 URJ200, AISIN) - $105.50) - Exact same as OE
Belt is $112 (full pop OEM Toyota retail, any more than that is gouging)
~$50 for coolant.

So parts should be closer to $275 (pump comes with water therm housing gasket too)
Labor is 3-4 hours tops, book value might be higher.

My 2 cents :D

Independent shop should be around $600, depends on where you live however.

Update: I found a new Toyota dealer (Toyota of El Cajon) for those of you in San Diego.
Quoted: $680 at El Cajon instead of $990 at Kearny Mesa Toyota who quoted (after negotiating/haggling) Blah!
Based on everyone's input I'd say that's a pretty competitive price especially for a dealer in San Diego
I also get a free rental car :)

Part of the reason I found this other dealer was I had my oil changed at Kearny Mesa Toyota and found oil dripping all over my driveway. After further investigating, it was clear they didn't remove my skid plates and I had literally a pool of oil in the skid plate that was splattered all over my undercarriage and dripped in my driveway ERRR!!!

I have never used Toyota of El Cajon before but so far based on the awesome attitude of the service manager, competitive pricing without haggling, I've got high hopes.

Good luck, hope they're a decent bunch. Nothing worse than an incompetent dealer

I was upset I had to replace mine at 85K, and now at 107K I have a crack on the top of the radiator... DUUUDE, are these 5.7Ls made in Alabama crap? ON my 100 it was replaced, only vecuase at 90K service it was recommended, on my 87 FJ60 , well it was 23 years old and someone had installed a Napa autoparts pump on it at some point.

I changed my oil and filter this weekend and thought I would check for any signs of leaking. I have 82k miles. Yep, there it was. A little dried white with pinkish hue drip line coming down. It was not wet, it was about 6 inches from the bottom where it would drip on skid plate.

So, the question is- when to replace? I've seen some replace at 125k with a cave looking stalactites hanging off of the pump and others as soon as it is known.

This seems like sticky material for the 200 section? I believe every 200 will face this same issue. Besides shaky mirror, this may be the new known problem with predictable time frame.

I don't thing there have been any catastrophic failures. It is a seal after all. My guess is I could wait some time (but perhaps not when going to cruise Moab this next May. What are others thoughts?

I had mine replaced before I hit my 3100 mile road trip. Knowing I was driving straight through (30 hours non stop-besides gas stops) with no relief for my rig I wanted to be safe and not sorry. Who really knows. Boils down to risk tolerance.
