It seems that lots of 200 owners have had to replace a leaky water pump, yet I can only find 3 threads with water pump in the title? Is this a common problem on the 5.7? I have an 08 LC with 72k and the WP is leaking a little. Whats the deal here?

Mine could be a hose or clamp or something, I need to investigate further....

It's an issue with all 5.7 water pumps. Replacement is tedious but straightforward. There are YouTube videos for the Tundra. Just find one and check it out. I imagine most humans with the scratch to own an LC or LX would get this work done at the dealer but it is easy.

If you have red stalagtites around water pump pulley, seal is leaking and pump is in need of replacement. Also look for red coolant residue on skid plates under your rig.

@Tripledave did you tackle your water pump replacement or get the dealership to switch it out?

For any of the DIY gents out there, we are now stocking the 5.7L (3UR) water pump. AISIN (idential as OEM, includes the gasket:
Part# EGW09491 (Fits 2008-15 URJ200, AISIN) - $105.50

We just swapped out a pump on our 200 Series race vehicle (CanguroRacing) along with some other PM and race prep items. 20k race miles on the motor and it looked brand new inside. We pulled the oil pan(s) and front timing cover as well... it looked brand new. We did the water pump purely as preventive maintenance with some big upcoming races (Vegas 2 Reno and Baja 1000), it would have likely been a non-issue but race-prep is about changing non-issue parts that might be an issue :D

So it turns out that the water pump on my 08 had been replaced 2 years ago at the dealership (Germain Toyota of Naples) at around 55k, and it was not the source of my leak, exactly. The truck has 72k now. The leak was coming from a hose that had not been clamped on, most likely when they did this repair. The clamp was on the hose, but had not been positioned at the the end of it and was just dangling some distance down the hose. Same service dept that incorrectly installed a CABIN AIR FILTER. :bang:

Neither actually. I took my rig to an independent toyota/Lexus shop and had them do the work under my close scrutiny/supervision. Easy work but tedious and hard on the knuckles since it's so tight in there. Basically I trust no one, especially the dealers, so I let the owner of this shop persuade me to give them a shot. The upside of doing it this way is that I now have access to TIS and Techstream for things I would have to use the dealer for otherwise while giving this owner a chance to earn my business and trust. Sorry for the rant

Right on

Replaced mine at about 125k I think. $1100 at dealership....always had trouble free work there, but at a price. Independents in my city have been lousy....

Dealer here in the UAE actually recommends the pump replaced with the timing belt as preventative maintenance i think at 150k kms need to double check on the mileage

I thought the 200 had a timing chain??

The 5.7 has 2 timing chains, no timing belt. (3UR-FE)

Older models had belts as well we have the 1gr + 2uz/1ur engines on the 200s. Service techs said with the newer models with chains they still are recommending to replace it in the at over 150/160k kms

I dont understand this, are you saying older model 3UR-FEs had timing belts? And Ive never heard of replacing a timing chain at 90k miles. 2008 LC 200 with 3UR-FE Maintenance schedule up to 120k miles does not mention anything about timing chain service or maintenance of any kind.

I know that but a 3UR-FE is a 3UR-FE.

Sorry for the confusion the 1ur, 3ur and 1gr all had chains. I was talking of the 2uz 4.7 engines having belts. The dealers here noticed most water pumps failing shortly after the timing belts on the 4.7 being replaced, so to save on added labour and as a preventative maintenance they used to recommend to replace at that interval. For engines with timing chains they'll still recommend this if drivers a) use the vehicle frequently off road or b) cover high mileages in very short time as they realised this is the usual lifespan the part. Grocery getters and school run cruisers that don't get pushed a lot usually have notes put on their file to inspect the pump for leaking every general or major service. Some dealers inspect every 20k others at 60k intervals and of course some don't look at all.

I called Toyota about getting a price together to replace my water pump - I found the pink stalactites when I removed my skid plates. Should I have them address the timing chain as well or is that not something that needs attention while I have a mechanic opening up my truck?
thank you
