..Edited now that I have a proper listing in the Parting Out section..
Not super familiar with this forum so I apologize if I posted this in the wrong place.

Little background, I've been piecing together all of the parts to build a 4x4 Chinook for a bit now, soon I'm going to be stripping the body etc off of this 1994 FZJ80 non-triple locked, rebuilding the rolling chassis, dropping a 1977 Chinook body on it, tossing a 5VZ-FE from a '98 4Runner, and going out and adventuring with my ideal rig. Combination of modern niceties of EFI, disk brakes, and the reliability of the mechanical 5spd and transfercase, I'm sure I'll find some roadblocks along the way, but I sold all of my other adventure rigs to fund this project so I'm all in.

Current build plan is:
-Strip the body off
-Rebuild the rolling chassis
-Lift it 3" or so (Dobinsons and Billsteins)
-Manual Front Hubs
-4.88 and ARB lockers
-Drop the 1977 Chinook body on top
-3.4l
-R150f
-VF1A or the HF2AV (converted to part time)

I have all these parts and am currently rebuilding the 3.4l.

My brother and I had a late 70's Toyota Galavan (similar to a Chinook) back in college.

I too have a dream of finding a nice one and converting it to a solid axle Toyota (although I may use a mini truck for the conversion if it ever happens). Will look forward to following this thread.

She's as rough on the inside as she looks like on the outside, but I'm going to gut it and do some fiberglassing to close up the compartments I'm not going to use. Repair the slouching roof, and new canvas.

Cost of items so far.
$360 -R150f and Vf1A from a junkyard 1988 pickup
$450 -1998 4Runner with 3.4 and wiring
$950 -1977 Chinook
$1600 -1994 Land Cruiser

It got a little sketchy, but got it done. Going to borrow a steam cleaner and get the 1FZ cleaned up and pulled off the frame. Then its on to fully cleaning the frame and probably prep and Por15 to get the thing protected.

I have to admit to wanting to do something similar since seeing one of these conversions on some social media platform. Tagging along for the ride, good luck!

I'm confused about the engine and tranny choices. Is this 80 series a '91/'92 3FE or the more modern 1FZ-FE?

5VZFE 190 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. 1fzfe 212 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque.

I just helped my daughter do her HG on her '98 4runner and wouldn't think it'd have enough balls to move around a 3" lifted 80 on 35s. It can barely move her mildly lifted 4runner with DIY weld up bumpers! She does have the slushbox so that's a power suck, and she bitches about the lack of power. She also wants more lift and larger tires

A $1600 80 is pretty cheap - why not graft the camper onto the 80 front? You would have more cab room in the 80 vs the mini truck.

I personally like the looks of the 70s Hilux body over the 80, I think it looks more put together than the chinook slapped on the 80.
The 80 body also was a critter nest so it stunk of animal feces and urine etc. and it was generally rotted out.

Here is my reasoning with the drivetrain and weights.

Stock FZJ80 frame, suspension, and axles weighs in at roughly 1,100 lbs
Stock 3rd gen 4runner frame, suspension, and axles weighs in roughly at 800 lbs

1FZ-FE, A442F, and HF2AV all together total roughly 1,100 lbs
5VZ-FE , R150F, and VF1A all together total roughly 700 lbs

With my planned drive train I'll have a mechanical trans and mechanical 2wd, 4Hi, and 4Low instead of a slushbox and AWD.

FZJ80 body weighs in around 1,800 lbs
Hilux Cab plus bare fiberglass Chinook weighs around 1200 lbs

I didn't do a bunch of measurements but I'm fairly certain that the 1FZ won't fit inside the Hilux engine bay without adding some weird hood scoop.

The people who did this swap first had a similar drivetrain pushing 37s with no major issues.

I'm sure you all have seen a bunch of tired/overworked 22Rs pushing around 37s.

I already had the 5vz as well on a spare 4runner so I figured why not. Both motors I had were very wet, so I would end up doing a rebuild of sorts either way. Plus with the regear I expect the 5vz to push the rig no problem as a lot of people are running big tires, lifted, and armored Tacos and 4Runners nearing the 5,000-5,500lbs area with a regear and some drivetrain work.

Okay 35s might be a bit bonkers for size on this thing honestly, but I'm going to trust the process.

Everything is off the frame now, I'm going to get the needle scaler and wire wheel out to knock off as much of the rust as I can, then I settled on going with a fluid film for protection. I think something like NHOU or Fluid Film for it's creep ability and I don't mind spraying it on occasionally.

Sounds logical to me👍🏾
