I just bought my FZJ80 and it came with a ARB front bumper and Warn M8000 winch. Is the 8000 appropriate for occassional/ emergency use? Will it hold up for pulling myself out or helping others? Or should I sell it and buy a stronger whinch?

People around here go with the 9000lb winches or higher. And 8000 should be good if you are not really horribly stuck and will pull out most anything else.

There are some here that do have the Warn M8000. Check out the outfitting section for lots of info on winches.

Carry some extra cable and a snatch block...

If you get really stuck you'll need it...

I wouldn't put a M8000 on my 40... but I just plan on using my winch often and hard...

You will never get consensus on something like this. One person's "occasional use" is another person's "wheel it hard" and vice versa.

An expedition equipped 80 weighs ~6,500#.
The so-called experts say winch rating should be a MINIMUM of 1.5x the vehicle weight.
Winches are rated for the first wrap on the drum.
Mud changes the equation when compared to rocks.
Snatch blocks double the capability of the winch.
A fast winch is important to some; a slow winch is acceptable to others.

The bottom line is that you have to select a winch that you are comfortable with and that you have confidence will work when and where you need it.

i have an m8000 on my 80 and haven't run into any problems where it wasn't enough yet

I've got an 8274 which is rated at 8000#'s and is has failed to pull my 80. It does however drag other vehicles to itself nicely. :D

I would spend any "upgrade" money on more mods/maintinence before I'd upgrade from the 8000. If you were making the decision without already owning the 8000, I'd go bigger. I went with the M12000:D , the same as many others.

It needs to be noted that an 8274 is a MUCH better winch than a M8000...

If an 8274 can be stalled on an 80, I wouldn't think twice about bolting on an M8000.

I have a 7500 winch on my 80. It is not enough by itself to get my own truck out of the worst-case problem. My truck weighs 5700 lbs and when well stuck could reach up to 10,000 lbs. pulling weight. My winch will not pull my truck up a tree as in the movie where the gods were crazy. But yours will help you in a pinch.
I grew up with a 40 in the family and with the understanding that a LC is in itself a rolling winch. We used to pull out whole thick trees for firewood. In Reverse! Then we would run over them instead of using an ax to cut them up. It was easier that way! Our old 40 was also known to pull motorhomes from raging streams without a winch. What you have is better than no winch at all. You do drive a LandCruiser.
The most common use of your winch is to help others. When you are stuck, your winch is usually going in the wrong direction to reverse your course as it is mounted on your front, not the back. It is best used to help out others, especially those who do not drive LC's
When crossing a difficult area such as a stream, you send the best truck first, followed by the weaker ones. You save the winched truck for last so that the winch can be used to bring back those who fail. That is why my winch is labeled "Jeep Snatcher". It is not for use on Toyotas.
Both of my brothers have 80's and bought winches on the same day that I did. Neither of them have mounted theirs yet. Those winches are both still in the boxes. They have been to Moab and other places. They have not needed the winches. I have used my winch to remove fences, move cars, and other uses around the home. I have never used mine off-road. The same holds true for my high-lift jack. After all, we do drive Land-Cruisers. We are not toying with trucks that have four or five letter words on the grille!
I would prefer a stronger unit, but with creative use I don't worry.

if it came with it, keep it and just buy a snatch block..

heck, you already have it, and that's better than most 4wds out there. Use it until you figure out it's not enough. Unless it's in like new condition and the value would decrease significantly if you keep it for a while.

Get a good snatch block, an extension line, and you're prepared for the worst already.

The determining factor is obviously the terrain. Mud or big rocks vs mild stuff. Plus if you're going to be alone a lot or not.
