I'm trying to mount a Warn 9.5xp in an old ARB bumper and can't figure out how to make it right.

The winch will fit inside the bumper, and I've had it in there for a couple months now. But the way it's sitting in there is wrong.

The opening in the bumper is off center so the winch will only fit one way with it's feet forward. but the way it sits in there the cable does not go straight through the fairleads. It has to make a sharp turn to get around the drum and down to the fairleads. (included a picture)

The obvious solution sees to be unspool the drum completely and run the winch backwards. But I thought I heard they arent designed to run in reverse like that. Something about while your running it in reverse you actually fighting the brake, and thats why your supposed to free spool cable out not run the winch in reverse.

Do I need to trade this winch for a compatible one??
Is there some way to take it apart and make it work??

Please Help!!

Looks like the owners maual show the winch (looking at the feet) with the motor on the left. It will only fit in the winch with the motor on the right and the controls clocked around to be accessable.

I used it on my old bumper with the feet down and had no issues.

not sure what to do now

Hi All:

Have you talked with tech support at ARB-USA? I'd start there - I'm sure they have dealt with issues like this before.

Good luck!

Alan

Looks like you have a bumper made for a Warn 8274 winch, not a planetary winch.

Hi All:

Ding, ding! 1911 wins a prize!! :D :o

Now that I look at the bolt pattern on the pic of the ARB bull bar it is obvious that 1911 is correct, that is the model intended for the Warn M8274 vertical winch.

Honestly, the M8274 is superior winch to the 9.5XP so would not be any loss to you to switch to.

Regards,

Alan

I'm wondering if the new arb bumper is any different?

I found a guy that will trade an 8274-50 for my winch.

What does the 50 mean? is that the same thing?

Did they come in different configureations, or is this what I need??

Anything I should be looking at when getting a used winch??

The -50 is just an updated version with a slighty different control pack (I think the -50 was in reference to Warn's 50th anniversery.) You can't go wrong with that winch. Just make sure it works and you should be good to go!

Bingo, that is correct. It has a T-shaped instead of round clutch handle, and uses the late-style Warn controller.

I'm curious, what does an "old" ARB bumper look like? Maybe this is the "commercial" ARB bumper that can accommodate a 8274 winch? Post up some pics once you've mounted everything up properly. When did you buy your ARB bumper?

I picked it up used from a local mudder. Looks nice, I need to figure out where to get the turn signals.

These are the only pictures I have of it, one with no winch in it, and one with the 9.5 mounted improperly.

Any idea how old that makes it????

ARB USA is telling me they don't think the 8274 will fit because the motor is still on the passenger side. They said my bumper looks like it wsa designed for the larger winches that have the motor mounted on the driver side.

Warns web site says the 8274 needs 6.54 inches on the passenger side. The bumper has a shade over 6 7/16 maybe as much as 6 15/32. Sooo now I'm not sure it will fit.

I guess what would really help is pictures of old ARBs with winches inside. I guess I need to do some searches.....

I see other people have mounted 8274s in old arbs but there are two types of these bumpers. Tech support is telling me it looks like I have the bumper designed for the 10k and up winches.

I wanted to avoid doing metal work on the bumper in case I ever wanted to sell it, but it looks like I may be moving that direction.

I bet that someone might trade you an M12K for that 8274-50.

I mounted the 8274 in the bumper today. (need to find some washers) I had to trim off one of the light tabs and a little off of the inside of the back of the bumper like others have done.

Looks like there is a small clearance problem. Because the drum is so big the first few raps contact the bumper edge before the fairlead. Looks like an easy fix, I'll have to take a half inch or so off of the bottom of the rope opening.

Anyone know what those other two openings are for in the bumper???
