I just picked this up, seller said the PO had rebuilt it. However I can’t find a place for the black power wire, only the red. Most of the pictures I’ve found online have newer solenoids.

Also, how do you get a wrench on the nuts to tighten them? Not a lot of clearance. I’m assuming you need square nuts from warn that fit in the aluminum housing snugly?

Thanks in advance!

I did find a picture of one that had the black wire coming out of the motor:

(This is not my winch, just a pic I found)

if the motor doesn't have the lower lug, it goes on one of the motor mounting bolts

Thanks for the reply. From the picture I found of one mounted on a truck and based on what you’re saying it appears that it goes on this screw circled in red, but it’s flush mounted. I’ll have to unscrew it take a look.

That would make more sense. I wonder why that guy has mounted it underneath on that lug below The two red arrows. I’m assuming it just needs to be grounded to the motor somewhere?

I took out the screw where that guy had mounted his negative terminal and it’s come shaped/wouldn’t take a lug connector very well. I’m thinking one of these two hex nuts on the end would be a better bet. Thanks for your help. I’ll hook it up to a battery and test it out before I mount it.

The old Prestolites (maybe others) don't have a bolt/terminal on the bottom of the motor case. Those motors are grounded thru one of the long skinny bolts that hold the motor to the upper gear housing.

The newer motors (like the one in the photo) have an actual lug on the bottom that is the best place to ground the motor case.

I have one of each. The one I have with the lug on the bottom is a later, 4.X HP Warn motor. My older Prestolite (2.X HP) is grounded thru the mounting bolt.

Hope that's helpful.

Thanks for the reply that’s helpful. So do you think I should try to modify/weld a nut onto the bottom bolt for the ground? Or just ground it through one of those two bolts that goes through the length of the motor that Gnob pointed to with arrows? Thanks in advance

I purchased my 1st 8274 back in the 80's and it didn't have a grd wire. I recently rebuilt it and added a grd using one of the long screws on the end of the motor. My later 8274-50 came with a grd.

Good to know, I ended up buying an Albright style solenoid off of Amazon. I wired it up and used the end bolt for the ground like you did. However, when I use the controller, I hear noise, but the drum doesn’t spin. Do you think it could be a bad motor? It’s supposedly brand new but old rebuilt unit.

show us your wiring

To test the motor, checkout the last post in the link below.

Idk anything about the Albright. When I rebuilt mine I had NOS Warn solenoids. When the solenoids eventually fail, I'll be updating to an Albright.

Thanks for the tips and links everybody.

I was able to get the drum to spin for a second or two and then it stopped. I already took apart the wiring and found this. The inside of the motor didn’t look to be in very good shape. It looks like some of these copper pieces are chewed up. I think I’m just going to buy an xp9.5 or the bigger series 15 industrial 70865 motor.

This is turning into an expensive project. Guy was asking $1000, I offered $600 assuming it worked, then $400 after seeing it looked rough and couldn’t test it. Hopefully I can be all in for less than $1500 after I rebuild the whole thing.

The latter option: ground it to the long skinny mounting bolts that gnob's arrows point to

Also, still a great deal. 400 for the winch, another 500 for a high performance motor plus albright. That's, what, $1000 for a wicked 8274? Pfft -- in a heartbeat

that motor doesn't really look terrible to me.
make sure the motor terminals aren't grounding to the case. those wafers disintegrate.

This is the way!

You'll be happy you did in the long run.

Good to know I just keep seeing posts on people getting them for 200ish for rebuild projects. Still crack open the case and see what needs to be rebuilt inside. Should be a fun project. I’ll be putting it on my fj40.

Thanks for the feedback. Are you talking about the copper wires that are hooked onto the carbon bushings?
