I bought an old jeep with a (1975)working M8274. IT was in bad shape. I re-wired it just as the diagram warn supplied. I painted and polished. Put it back together and it didn't work. I re-did all the contacts, made sure my motor ran by hot wiring it, it spun in both directions. I decided it was a ground issue, as the - post from battery attached to one of the long screws in the motor housing. It didn't look correct, but found no other place to attach to motor. To test the theory, I ran a second - wire to battery from the solenoid tray, and it began working, only in spool in direction, wont spool out. This leads me to believe its a solenoid issue? Does the solenoid tray need to make good contact(ground to) the motor for this to work? any suggestions greatly appreciated

The contract pack needs a solid ground. Some solenoids require a ground wire on one of the small lugs.

Make sure you're running the thin ground wire to the bottom bolt on the motor.

I've looked all over that motor, there is no ground bolt, or place to thread one in that I can find. When I got it, they have been running ground to one of the long bolts of the motor, on the end.

I carefully welded a bolt to an old Warn motor for a ground cable. The new motors have a ground stud.

I opened the motor and located the stud on the outside of a pole piece, where I was sure that the heat wouldn't damage a winding. There are flat head screws that secure the pole pieces, so near one of those.
